Any help??

Our 120 lb lab/shepherd mix tangled with a skunk, right by our bedroom window at 10:45 tonight. I remembered that tomato juice didn't really work, so I went online and everyone seems to recommend a mixture of 1 qt hydrogen peroxide, 1/4 cup baking soda, a couple squirts of dish soap and enough water to cover your dog - which with Buckley requires a lot.

So he's somewhat cleaned and now in his crate (which he hasn't been in in a few years). We're sleeping in the family room at the other side of the house. I have this fear that I'm going to be washing every thing that's cloth in our bedroom.

I'm also sure Buckley still smells, but my nose is so burned out from that horrible smell, I can't really tell.

So anyone have any helpful suggestions - they would be grately appreciated!!!!

I would call the local pet store and ask what they have available. I am sure your dog is suffering from the smell too. My dog won't go out when there is a skunk around. The aroma in the air is enough for her, my cats and me too. Skunks stink jut walking through the yard. It must be a bad experience for all!

The last time our home got sprayed dead-on by a very irate skunk, we all smelled like skunk the next few days. I ran some errands the next day and when I would get back into my vehicle, it reeked and I'm sure I did too everywhere I went...My husband had changed his clothes in a locker room and the other guys who came into the locker room later thought a skunk was loose in there, and just from my husband's clothing in his locker...and so on. Only time helped us. The bad smells went away. It was just tough carrying them around with us for those few days afterward:eek:!

One suggestion, make sure your dog didn't get bitten. Our county has had several rabid wild things recently. Take care.

I once stopped to let a skunk cross the road, and just as it got to the shoulder, it sprayed my front tire! Next time, I won't be so kind! I tried washing the wheel with tomato juice, and it lessened the smell, but it might have been from the excessive water and detergent as well. It smelled for quite some time. My sister's dog also got into an argument with a skunk, and the vet prescribed daily baths until the smell went away. No special remedy, just deodorizing dog shampoo. Our beagle has a very sensitive nose and prefers to stay inside if a skunk has been anywhere near.

I have also heard that skunks are often rabid, so hopefully your dog is up on his shots.

Thank you everyone. Our bedroom smelled so bad I took a change of clothes for both Glenn and I and moved them to an un-smelly part of the house. Today it appears* (*= only the public will be able to know for sure) to have pretty well disipated. Buckley still had kind of a stinky head, so I think I'll do the remedy wash on him again today. I have the house opened up and the whole house fan on.

He doesn't appear to have been bitten, but I'll keep an eye our for that.

I have never smelled anything so pungent and strong. (and I did 2 semesters in a cadaver lab in college.) It gave me a headache.

Don't have any remedies, Karlynn, just wanted to say I sympathize. One day last year my Sadie dog went tearing out the front door and chased a skunk into the woods. I don't know where the skunk went or how on earth Sadie avoided being "skunked." Anyway, I will be most interested in what works to deal with the aftermath of poor Buckley's skirmish. Hope it's all clear by now.

Our German Shepard got skunked some years back.
We tried everything but nothing really worked..............just time.

Karlynn, I feel for you.....and poor Buckley!
Your post brought back "fond" memories of my late Airedale, Hamish.
What a hunter! He and my labrador decided to attack a skunk which had found its way into my garage one night....of course it was 11 p.m.
We all got sprayed, but I managed to get them into the mud room.
Too bad those dreaded skunks are nocturnal, otherwise we all would never have to deal with this type of stink in the middle of the night.

Leather items really absorb the odour....hubby went to work with his leather briefcase in the trunk of the car, even his belt stunk!
The home remedy is the peroxide, dish soap, baking soda mixture.
Pet shops carry many products...Skunk Kleen, Skunk Off, etc.
There is another enzyme based product which is super, the name escapes me right now.
Hang in there, open the windows, run that fan:)

This is working! Buckley is about to get another bath - he may be half Lab, but he hates water that he can't swim in.:(

Sorry I'm Late

Sorry I'm Late

Karlynn, I think I've used the stuff Bina is talking about. It's called "Nature's Miracle". It's sold mostly for pet "accidents" , but also works well on blood stains, and skunk spray. My brother used it last week on his Jack Russell, and it wasn't the first time. At least he's a lot smaller than your dog!:D Hopefully your dog is smarter than my brother's! Brian

Thanks, I may run and get some. I have most of the smell out now, but he's still pretty stinky on his head, right between and above his eyes. I'm guessing that's where the skunk aimed.
