Hi All.

Just a quick update to let you know my dad had his INR taken today and it was 2.7. The clinic is keeping him on the same dosage for the next 7 days (10 ml 5 days and 2.5 ml 2 days). His normal range is 2-3.

My mom called me and was concerned because his results today were higher than his last INR, which was 2.2. I told her it was ok as long as he was in range.

Out of curiosity, what kind of spreads do you guys see from test to test? For example, is it 2 numbers apart, 4 numbers apart?

By the way, my dad has his 1 month check up tomorrow w/ his surgeon. I'll let you know how it goes.

Thanks.

Jennie

I seem to stay between 2 and 3. Some timess it 2.2 and then maybe 2.7. I test once a month. Hope that helps. As long as I don't go below 2 or really over 3.5 I'm happy.

Tom

Jennie your correct. Tell mom not to fret that it's not going to be exactly the same every time. All it has to be is in range and that is happening now. As far as numbers go, I can vary by as much as .4 between tests. Sometimes more.

Jennie,

The "Safe Range" for INR is from 2.0 to 5.0.
Below 2.0, the risk of STROKE goes up.
Above 5.0 the risk of BLEEDING goes up.

Most Aortic Valve Patients are advised to try to stay between 2.0 and 3.0 unless there are other stroke risks, then they are advised to stay between 2.5 and 3.5.

Most Mitral Valve Patients are advised to try to stay
between 2.5 and 3.5 unless there are other stroke risks,
then they are advised to stay between 3.0 and 4.0.

Don't forget that the test results are NOT precise and there can be some variation from test on the same person and same machine. Variation of +/- 0.5 is not uncommon. That is why many of us prefer to be on the High Side of our range since most of us are more afraid of a STROKE than a Bleeding Incident. (and several members have reported INR's between 5.0 and 8.0 with NO Bleeding). I would NOT want to stay at 8.0 for very long, but have had a couple of (probably erroneous) readings around 5.0 with NO serious problems.

This is very helpful, guys. Thanks for your replies.

BTW, the nurse that took my dad's blood last week said that a 2.2 was better than a 2.6. I'm not sure what explanation she gave but would love to find out.

Yeah, me too! Another rule to remember, it's easier to replace blood cells then brain cells. Translation=Rather see a higher INR then a low one. If you bleed, the cells can be replaced, if you stroke out, brain cells CANNOT be replaced.

There is very little difference between an INR of 2.2 or 2.6. Your talking a mere 4 to 5 second difference in clotting time.

Hey....what is the "Oh Ship" number on the low end? The lowest I have ever been was 1.9 but get a bit on edge when I stay around 2.8-3.2 and then test a 2.2.

2.0 or below. Don't go there.

If someone does go below 2.0, what should be done to bring up their INR ASAP?

Jennie
Increase the Coumadin by 20% over a week. Don't try the loading dose thing, all it does is create wild swings.

Hello Everyone,
I just signed up, and I've got to tell you, that you are all GREAT!! You have all helped me in my recovery of a Mitral valve replacement (done March 30/07). My INR still bounces around from 1.7 which has been the lowest to 3.2. I'm taking 6mg one day then 7mg the next day. I think this too much, but my Doctor wants me to be on the higher end of the scale so the valve can clean itself. I'm learning not to get upset when my dosage changes.

By reading everything you guys have posted, you have helped me get through the highs and lows and the emotions one goes through. My surgery was said and done in 10 days. I had no symptoms prior going to the ER being unable to breath.

I just want to say thanks
Freddie

So lets say that I hit 1.8 and I take 5mg a day which is 35mg x 20% = 7mg Should I break one in half and take 2.5mg like on Monday and 2.5mg Thrursday
Yessiree, you got it.

About time you come out of the shadows. :D

I like to keep mine on the higher end, because I like to pig out on my green veggies and this allows me to do so.

If you have dose questions, ask away. Heck, any Coumadin/Warfarin questions.

That's right. Increase the dose over a week and test at the end of that week to see where you are.
