Just want to wish Rob's mother the best of surgeries and an uneventful recovery on Wed. We know how worried you are, Rob and you and your mother will be in our prayers. Godspeed!

Rob,

I want you to know that you and your mom will be in my prayers. I found myself forgeting to honor my pledge sometimes (pumphead?) so I have put a daily reminder on my system to give that extra nudge to remember to pray specifically for those surgeries each morning.

I hope all goes well.

Tom

Rob,

Hugs and prayers for your mom and the entire family. Hope everything is picture perfect.

Godspeed.

Rob, your mother and you are in my prayers, I missed this post of yours earlier

The surgeon said that she needs to have her aortic valve replaced due to narrowing and leakage, and that the tricuspid also leaks and needs either repair or replacement. The mitral leaks as well, but not too significant at the moment, and may not need to be addressed. They will have to also do some tests prior to surgery to see if she has any existing blockages. This may be tricky, as she is severely allergic to the contrast dye. She almost died from this in the past.
The surgeon tells me there are no alternative dyes, and that they will bring her in a day earlier to pre-med her for the test. This is to counter the allergic reaction, and also have all the necessary equipment there in the event that she still has the reaction. To me, this is scary. I told him that I don't want to have something real bad happen from this test, suggesting to not even do it. He said that he needs to because he would not want her to have the valves replaced, and then see her go into a heart attack while on the table due to a blockage.

I don't know when she had her reaction, but I wanted to let you know Justin had a really bad reaction to the dye when he was 18 months, very high fever, chills, turned almost purple, they had to ice him down, and give alot of meds it was awful. It was the day before surgery and they almost had to postpone it which was a big deal since we had to have 6 people that were Aneg give blood THAT day for him and if surgery was postponed,it wouldn't have been as fresh as they used for clotting factors, but they were able to operate,

But since then they usually gave him benedryl and massive steroids before, and after and he was ok, a few years ago, the PC said something in the dyes had changed since 89, so they gave less of the meds preop and he didn't have any problems. Now they "just' give him the benedryl, because of his history, but not the sterods and he hasn't had any problems.
BUT he isn't allergic to shellfish, I think the people that still have alot of problems with the newer dyes MAY be the ones that are allergic to shelfish, but don't quote me on that.
I will say many prayers. My mom has had heart surgery and AAA and going into her heart surgery I thought since I went thru my baby having it, I would be fine, but it is a whole different thing if it is your parent. Lyn

Rob,

GOOD LUCK to your Mom :).

Hi Everyone,

Thank you so much for all your thoughts and prayers. We took mom to the hospital this afternoon, and tomorrow morning she will have the contrast dye test for blockage. We will meet again in the afternoon with her heart surgeon, and will review the results to see if she will also need a bi-bass along with the heart valve replacements and repair.

I'll try and update tomorrow evening, and if things go as scheduled, she will have her open heart surgery on Thurday.

It was good to spend the weekend with her, my dad and the family. This has really taken a toll on dad. I can see how worn down he is. Hopefully he will get some rest tonight.

Lyn, thank you so much for the information. We found it very useful, and yes, you hit it on the head. Using a newer dye than when she had a bad reaction years ago. But I do think she has a shell fish allergy. I will inform her doctor in the morning. Also, they are pre-meidicating her with steriods to hopefully prevent any adverse reaction to the dye.

Best wishes to all, keep us in your thoughts and prayers.
Rob

Update for Weds

Update for Weds

Hi,

Mom had the contrast dye test performed today. The doctors premedication and the newer type dye as Lyn mentioned above worked!!!!

She had no bad reactions, and the test results were great!! She has no blockage. So, no bi-passes will be required. This means less time on the operating table tomorrow morning.

She goes in in the morning this Thursday, 5/31/07 and will have the Aortic valve replaced, the Tricuspid either repaired or replaced, and the mitral repaired.

It will be a long day for all, but she is a fighter, and I think she will have the strengh and will to get through it. I am so glad to be up here with the family as we face this trying time.

Thank you all for keeping us in your thoughts and prayers. Tomorrow will be a long and late day, but I will try and update you if I can. If not, or if I am at the hospital too late, I will call Ben and ask that he post an update for me.

Thanks everyone, Your the best!! and.. I share all your posts with the family.

Rob
