Hey everybody,

I'm doing some research on foreign surgical centers that are being set-up in locations including India, Istanbul and Singapore for lower-cost valve replacements and repairs.

Has anyone had their valve repaired or replaced at one of these centers? Have you thought about it? If so, which facility? I'm a aware of Globalchoice Healthcare. Do you know of other facilities?

In advance... Thanks!

Adam:)

Eastern Europe

Eastern Europe

If you are looking for cheaper and in the same time good heart surgery, then why don't you search about in Eastern Europe. I come from Bulgaria and my planned surgery will be made in Sophia (Sofia), the capital. There are some good specialists and surgeons and as a new member of the European Union the bills are not as in Western Europe yet :) But in Sofia they don't do repairs, only replacements with mechanicals and tissues (most porcine).

I also may go to Athens, Greece, where they work for years with the On-X, which is still hard available in Sofia. Athens is about 600 km from Sofia and I prefer the On-X (if my cardio recommend it too).

If you are sure you want a repair, then you may check about in Google if they do that in Greece, becouse in Athens they have a big cardio-institute.

Wish you successful search!

Yep, I think the name of the greek heart institute is Aristotel Onassis, Athens.

Thanks Ivo!

Best of luck with your anticipated procedure. Had you heard of any of the India-based valve surgery centers?

Also, why are you choosing to go for the mechanical? Have you considered the Ross Procedure?

Cheers,

Adam

What would very much concern me is what happens if you suffer a complication during the several weeks following surgery. Do you have to stay close by the hospital for several weeks 'just in case'?

I was taken ill during a car journey from the hospital where I had my surgery to my daughter's home some 150 miles or so eleven days after surgery. It wasn't possible to get back to the hospital where I had my surgery so I ended up in an ER near where my daughter lives. Then four days later I was admitted as an emergency to another hospital when I had complete heart block.

If you are thousands of miles from home you also need to consider how the long flight will affect you after surgery. To be honest, I wouldn't fancy travelling so far soon after OHS regardless of how much money I could save.

I don't doubt that the care and expertise might well be excellent, I just wouldn't like to travel more than I need. Where I live it is essential to travel in order to have OHS, but I am talking about short domestic flights.

We had a posting at this website about a couple from North Carolina who traveled to India to get the man( who had no insurance) a mitral valve replacement. At Duke they were told the surgery might run 200K but in India the total was more like 8k. The surgeons in New Delhi( don't remember the name of the surgeon or hospital) were all American board certified and the rest of the team was excellent. They had only good things to say about their treatment and even were taken on a tour of the Taj Mahal while recovering.
