Lets hope it was a "false positive". Niki, can't they check for certain during your cath? Hope so.
That is part of the plan when they do the cath. Also, I talked to my local card earlier this evening and she was shocked to hear about the leaking. And the MUGGA was done in Dallas. So she has no idea what they're looking at that says I have leakage. Hopefully it's a mistake and won't be an issue. But I do think I probably have the paricardial constriction, which will require surgery. My local card has been saying that she thought something was up with my paricardium for a while now, but Texas Children's said that wasn't the case. I think she'd love to be right. ;)

It sounds like the valve issue could be an error Niki. Especailly since your card can't hear it, correct? They may have been seeing reverberation (sp?) way the sounds bounce off the valve, etc. High velocity of the blood flowing through the center of the valve can look like a leak as well. Which is totally normal for a mechanical valve. Can you tell I have had some "scares" and false positives! It got so bad that I only permitted the head of echocardiography (Dr) at my former hospital down south to do my tests. It really messes with your head. All the worry for you and your loved ones, etc. Posibilites that usually turn out to be nothing! At least that has been the case with myself. It really makes me consider a mid-life career change.;) Have seriously considered echocardiography/sonography! Program is only 18-24 months. Hummmmm. Maybe the techs need more practice. Good portion of the program is clinical. So you would think:confused:

If need be....will you have the percardium proceedure @ Mayo?

Take care:)

Niki,

Wishing you well for the cath and other issues. Hope all is easy and things get fixed. You are due for some good news.

Hoping that this brings you good news and answers to some of things that were concerning you. You have been able to overcome so many things. With new information, there isn't anything that you can't deal with. Our prayers are with you.
Kind regards,
Blanche

Don't know if it will help........

or not, but for those of you having cookie problems:

When I attempted to sign into Niki's guestbook from the link at the bottom, I got the same cookie warning. However, when I click on the guestbook link at the top of the page, it lets me go straight in. Dunno why as I am cyberilliterate, but it might help some of y'all.

Nki, sending lots of prayers for today for a smooth cath with no complications and for lots of answers, good ones, and praying also that a VR is not needed. Lots of love. Janet and Katie P.S. :D Just for grins, picture this: Katie "mopping" the kitchen today in nothing but her turquoise LIttle Mermaid panties, her purple slippers with feathers, and kneeguards and one elbow guard (she couldn't find the other)............sheesh! Quite a sight. Tried to get a pic, but the battery was dead.....................argh! Anyway, hugs and kisses. J.

hi Niki

Hope everything goes smoothly and you have a good rest before the cath.

Here's the latest update- hope all goes well tomorrow and you are on the way home soon!

Success! My INR was 1.2 this morning, so I had my cath around 11ish. As I was waiting in the recovery room (before the cath) they told me it was possible I'd be having my pacemaker placement later today, depending on what else they found in the cath. As it turned out, when I came out of the cath (which I only remember bits and pieces of) I was told they wanted a surgical consult before proceeding with the pacemaker. I was also admitted to the hospital so they could have me on heprin (blood thinner) over night.

The surgeon came in and said that even though I have some obstruction in my pulminary blood vessel he didn't feel it was worth the risk of surgery. So we're not doing anything about it. Also, there is NO leak (or at least, not significant) of my mechanical valve, so there is no need for major surgery.

I will, however, be having a bi-ventricular defibrillator placed tomorrow in the late morning. If everything goes well, I'll be able to go home Saturday. They will start me back on my coumadin, but not give me IV heprin or ingections. They'll just let my INR go up gradually on its own. We'll stay in a hotel Saturday night and head home Sunday. Of course, that's assuming that all goes well. The EP said he would leave my current pacemaker in as a back up until we know for sure that the new one is working right. At some point I'll have to have it removed, but we should be able to do that in Dallas. I assume they can leave the leads in, but I didn't ask. I'll try to ask tomorrow.

That's all for now. I'm sitting in the hospital (WOW! A hospital with wireless! :) ) and waiting for my surgery tomorrow. I just might make it back to work by Tuesday (I think Monday might be pushing it.). The EP said I could go back to work any time I want. And we all know me, I'll be back as soon as possible. ;-)

Niki:

That's good to hear. I thought of you today as we waited at Harris Methodist after John's heart cath. Had not checked my e-mail since late Wednesday afternoon, so I didn't know if you had had your cath or not.

Yeah, ear muffs are a good thing to have -- for those few instances when we Texans go to the land of snow. :D

Glad to read there's not major surgery in her near future. Keeping her in my prayers for the new "gadget" placement.

Excellent news, Niki!

Thoughts/prayers continue coming your way....

caringbridge update on Niki

caringbridge update on Niki

Niki is out of surgery for the pacemaker and we wish her an uneventful recovery.

Hello, world. I'm out of surgery (have been for several hours now, but was only recently allowed to sit up).

I was taken to the holding room around 11:30 and then taken to the cath lab at 12. I remember bits and pieces of the surgery because I was only given a local and sedative. This is not the firt time I've been aware of portions of a pacemaker surgery. This time I was in a little bit of pain as they tried to sew me up. Apparently I'm developing a resistance to anesthetic or something. Not cool.

Also, due to my blood vessels' general dislike for being poked, they were unable to get an arterial line started in either wrist. As they tried, the pain was enough to make me cry. I eas abe to get sedated enough at that point to not remember them using the femoral artery in my left groin.

I'm now in my room trying to grin and bear the pain in my shoulder while we watch some complementary movies on tv. But I wanted to at least let you know I'm out of surgery and on the road to rcovery. I'll try to be more detailed later. Thanks for all of your prayers. It's more powerful than many realize.

Now she needs a flight home!

Ack! I just got off the phone with the airline and the first flight out of here isn't until TUESDAY! Guess we'll be stuck here a bit longer than we thought...

I'm being released! We're just waiting for the pharmacy to fill my prescription for pain killers and then we can head over to the hotel. I'm on hold right now with American Airlines to try and get a flight out of here tomorrow. I can't wait to be back home!

Yup, I'm out of surgery and just waiting on the pharmacy to get me my pain meds so we can be discharged. Unfortunately, we are stuck here for a few more days. The next flight out of here that has seats available is Tuesday! We even asked about leaving from Minneapolis, but they only have first class. So we're stuck. We MIGHT rent a car and go up to Minneapolis anyway tomorrow, depending on how I feel. Just to gave something to do. Anyone in the area want to get together? ;)

Thanks for all of your thoughts and prayers!

Yes, I actually got a message from Allytiger and she came by my room on Thursday after my cath. We're staying in the same hotel, so I may see if she wants to do dinner with us tonight. It's funny, she called my husband on Friday to see how I was doing and a few minutes later ended up running into him on the hotel elevator (they hadn't met in person). They got to talking and when he said he was from Texas she asked "Hey, are you Niki's husband?" Pretty small world, isn't it. ;) I didn't think I'd still be here when the others got here, but perhaps we'll join them after all... We shall see. Thanks for letting Allison know I was here.

*grins*

INDEEDY it IS!!!

So glad you were able to meet with her ... and hope you are able to meet up with some of the others who are there right now as well.

Ya know ... if you can't get a flight out ... you could drive on down here to Illinois ;). He he he. Only joking ... well, maybe half-joking ;).

Thoughts/prayers coming your way for a continued SUCCESSFUL recovery!
