Hi all and today I went for my yearly checkup and to my surprise things are not as good as I had thought. I finally told them about the armpit cramping and left arm numbness and blurred vision (was afraid to tell them cause of serious fear!) and they feel I might be having blood clots and that my a-fib could have returned. I didnt get my echo today, instead now I have to get a nuclear test and a heart monitor and then an echo. My Doctor wants me to take one 81mg asprin along with my coumadin. Does anyone else here take both? Ok well any input would be greatly appreciated as always. Thanks for listening!:)

Sorry to hear about your problems. Hopefully, it will turn out to be somthing simple.
My son takes 325 mg aspirin, persantine (platelet thinner) and warfarin. They keep his INR between 1.8 and 2.5.
He has a heart pump right now, not a mechanical valve.

Oh, Hayley, I am sorry to hear this news. I hope they figure out what is going on.

I take both aspirin and coumadin because they work differently on the blood. I used to have a lot of TIAs prior to taking the aspirin and they have all but disappeared since my last OHS & the starting of the aspirin.

I will be praying for you. Sounds like it's time for a beach vacation.

coumadin and aspirin

coumadin and aspirin

I take both since I had my valve replaced.

Hayley,
Sorry to hear about your new problems.
Both my Card. and Surgeon said I could take an 81mg if I wanted, but it was no big deal either way. The only problem I had should be corrected with coumadin.
I took an asprin for a while but have since quit. Seems to make no difference for me.

Hayley:

My husband takes both coumaden and an enteric aspirin daily.

He is in chronic a-fib, and has been for 6 years. He also sports two St. Jude valves, and a tricuspid annuloplasty.

His cardio told us that coumaden and aspirin work on the blood in different ways, and that statistically, the aspirin improves ones chances of not having a blood clot. That is probably why your doctor thinks that adding the aspirin to your regimen would be beneficial. On an individual basis, I am not sure how one would "see" a difference. I think if you "googled" a-fib, coumaden and aspirin" you would find a wealth of information.

Al and I both take Coumadin and Aspirin .81 every day. One (Coumadin) deals with the coagulation cascade and the other (Aspirin) deals with platelets. They go hand-in-hand in protecting you against clots. Take your doctor's advice..it is a good thing.

Hi,

I have been on a 325 mg Aspirin and Coumadin combination for the last 7 years.

Although, I should point out that the aspirin I take is the coated kind, "Enteric". This is so to help prevent the effects of aspirin on the stomach lining.

I wonder if most of the other postings that state they take aspirin take a plain aspirin, or the coate, " enteric" kind?

I'm so blessed!

I'm so blessed!

Thank you so much for your input. I did take my 81mg aspirin (enteric) as directed and will try SO hard to not go into the "what if's". (Thanks Gina for that advise as well:) ) The Doc's office will call this week to schedule all of the tests and for now I will just "chill" (I know you find that hard to believe ha!) and wait for the results....other than that I really do feel super excellent!! I feel so blessed to be a part of this community. Thanks again all!:)

Hi Hayley

I am so sorry to read about these problems you are having, but happy to hear that they are looking into them for you!

My husband also takes an enteric coated baby aspirin every day, starting at one day post AVR. His Mayo cario told him it was optimal for the first year after valve surgery, and at his yearly post op they told him it was best to keep taking it.
