It's a smelly world, isn't it?

Anyone else notice how we tend to associate certain smells with people and or places/things? Sometimes, those smells that smell good to us ... don't smell good to others ... and vice versa. Sometimes, the smell is equally displeasing or pleasing to everyone.

Earlier today (Saturday), my sister noted how she loves the smell of her scarf ... because it smells like the home she and her husband own. I'm not so sure I agree with her assessment, but it is home to her....

For me, I associate newly-cut grass smells with awesome summers at home while I was a kid. I associate the smell of smoke with many bad experiences. And, of course, I love the smell of cars ... old and, in some cases, new ;).

So, how about you?

There's a certain kind of grass that grows around here, called sweet grass. It has a beautiful smell, reminds me of running through the grass when I was little, and closer to the ground :) . It smells like sweet woodruff.

And when I mow the grass, we have wild peppermint. It is very strong. When the mower hits a patch of that, it's a really neat smell.

And the tourist areas around here have souvenir shops. They sell those little bags filled with balsam pine needles. They smell so good.

As a child, we went to Cape Cod every summer and rented little cabins near the beach. They were built of pine wood. The smell of the pine, the ocean air, and the smell of early morning coffee brewing, bring back fond memories.

Well....Since you ask....LOL

I have to mention.....EVERY time I go up to central Maine to see my parents or grandma, as I did today, there is this certain section of highway that DEFINITELY smells of Cow....if you get my drift....no matter whether I am traveling north or south, I always get the smell when I pass this certain strip of rural farmland along the highway......:) :p :)

I love the smell of green chili roasting in the fall. The stores roast it in big steel bins that turn. Also in the fall the smell of the cotton gin and the newly ginned cotton reminds me of my childhood. My parents were cotton farmers and we lived near the gin. I still do live close to a gin. I love the smell of bread baking. It reminds me of mama's baking yeast rolls. And suntan oil smell reminds me of sand and sun. Love it!

JASMIN....it reminds me of a big climbing Jasmin that covered my home's patio when I was a little girl

in summers, at dusk, in the country my brother, sister & I would chase fireflies and put them in a jar. There was something in that summer evening that smelled so clean and fresh. Where I live now is not to many miles away from that area and in summers we have that same smell. It's lovely to sit on the porch at night - however, we rarely see fireflies anymore.

on the other hand, my ex used Sex Appeal cologne during his midlife crisis - a lovely smell. I was in New York boarding the ferry to the Statue and you know how crowded that is. Somewhere in that crowd was a man wearing the same cologne. I can pick it out anywhere - it does not bring nostalgia.

INDEED they do ... which is why I can't wait to do my radio show again ... and why I always include a song quote at the end of my signature ;).

once the pool is opened, the wind blows the smell of the chemicals & water through the window screens ... mmmm .... hooray, summer's finally here!

nancy, we also had mint patches at the home where I grew up, and usually they got swiped by the lawnmower ... a delicious smell (on the same lines, I can always tell when my husband has accidentally swiped my garlic patch with the mower or weed whacker!)

on some fall days, I wake up and the air is still cool and damp ... crisp, amazingly clean and refreshing, with the smell of dried leaves ... the smell of a perfect fall day ... it was the kind of morning that started off the day that my little Andrew was born. Only two or three times have I experienced it since... my family really thinks I am crazy when I announce "Today smells like the day Andrew was born!"

neat thread, cort!
