We are in the midst of an ice storm that is getting worse. This is on top of 6 inches of snow that never melted. So much for the "mild" winter that was predicted early in the season. We are sure paying for the warm December.

Here is a photo of the huge evergreen outside our front door. It is struggling under its own weight.

We were fine until January 16th, then old man winter came to town. It's been nonstop since then. I told Lyn earlier, you know, we shouldn't complain, it's only been a months worth of winter so far, but this is something else.

This morning I was thinking I'd rather have 6" of snow than the -11 temp we had last week. Now, I'm rethinking that thought.

Okay - but things are getting pretty - as long as you don't have to drive.

Hi Gina,

This is the first ice storm we've had in the seven years that we've been back here. We're a little bit farther north than you, and even though it's 24 out now, it's STILL freezing rain coming down. Ross must be really getting hit with the deep snow. I've been having a fit about my tree branches breaking off as soon as the wind starts whipping in a little while. I even went out and tried to knock some of the ice off with a broomstick which didn't work since the ice seems to be one with the branches. Then I just heard on the news about the tragic accident of that 9 yr. old girl being killed over in Miami Township when she was struck with a tree limb that fell on her when she was out walking her dog. I can't begin to imagine what her family must be going through. I certainly won't be complaining about any "inconveniences" of this storm anymore.

Keep warm, and stay inside!!!!

Know what you mean Peg - such a sad story.

We had a short blackout here (heard a huge thump) about 15 minutes ago and I noticed there is a huge tree down across the main road next to our house. Luckily it doesn't appear that it hit a car or anything just took down a line. I have the house set up for a complete power failure now because it appears that it has a great chance of happening.

I am sure the weather where you are is even worse. In fact, they are calling for blizzard conditions in the Dayton area later.

Still we are alive and are not in New York State where they had 11 feet of snow. I guess bad weather is all relative. I am still remembering winter in Los Angeles where the worst is a lot of rain.

PegB -- Just noticed you're in Mason. A while back I used to visit Mason for work -- one week per month, every month for about a year. Does the Montgomery Inn still have the best ribs in the region?

Stay warm and well.

Ole Man Winter's here for sure

Ole Man Winter's here for sure

Luckily for us we are too far north of Lakes Ontario and Erie and have managed, so far, to didge that massive blizzard that blew up from the States. All of the schools are closed in our county and what snow did arrive has been blown away from the decks and doors by high winds.

It has been very cold though with temps around 0 F. The water buckets in the barn freeze solid overnight--thank heaven for the hot water heater. Horses appreciate the warm water, too.

Dogs won't leave deck to do what's necessary. Smooth coats and deep snow.

It's winter, we're used to it and spring will be here soon.

Cheers!

My snow isn't all that deep, it's just been this fine powdery stuff nearly everyday. Now after the storm, I have about 8 inches on the ground, but I've seen much worse. We've only seen a glimpse of the sun maybe 3 days out of the last 30.

Isn't that the truth Gina! We don't have much snow really; we've had as much as four inches. But, it's just so cold!! I really feel for everyone dealing with the ice and heavy snow.

Nice pictures, by the way.

I am just now back on after 13 hours without power. The downed tree finally resulted in the transformer blowing (lots of sparks and a lightshow). I was watching when a snow plow decided he was going to push the tree out of the road and he took out the transformer totally in the process. Might have happened anyway but......

Lots of businesses closed including mine so I can stay home and get warm again. Chris had the generator running but it could only run the furnace OR the fridge so we had to alternate.

How much we take electricity for granted. I cannot imagine being without for days. :D

My mom lives in the coldest part of Missouri in an extremely old house (that our German ancestors built circa 1870's) and she said last week that her entire bathroom was frozen up, toilet and all! Miserable conditions, that!

Hi All

We've been coasting along on dear old Long Island so great.....until today. We don't have much snow, maybe an inch, but have heavy, heavy rain, wind and ice. Our back yard is going to be a skating rink tonight.....hope we don't have our cars frozen in....that happened to us once. It's just plain cold, windy, icy, rainy and NASTY!!!! UGH!

We actually had a snowstorm here - the first good one in many years. Got over a foot of snow, but with 45 mph winds making some mighty big drifts. Schools all closed for second day, and it's only 18 degrees out - no melting until late next week if the weather pundits are to be believed. Not grousing tho - we missed the ice storm this time, the sun's out and it's really pretty.

(with apologies to our friends from upstate New York!)

Here is another picture from today. Sure is pretty but sure is deadly for some.

What type of plant, albeit frozen plant, is that? I've described it to Cindy but we can't come up with what it is.

The plant in the left foreground - I am sorry to say I do not know the name. What you are seeing is the remains of a flowering stem that comes up from the center of a long, multileafed plant. Chris and I call it our Ohio century plant because it reminds us of the Century plant but that is not it. I cannot get a photo of the rest of the plant because it is covered in snow. I have been told we should cut the stem each year but we kind of like the way it looks. :D

The rest of the photo is a close up of a 25 foot tree that is in our front yard. I think it is a Maple but, again, not sure. I am very botany challenged. :D ;)

I think you're right about rethinking! We were still below zero this morning, a few degrees anyway, but the sun has been shining here all day and it's a whopping +9 degrees right now. I can live with the cold for a little while as long as the roads are good and the sun shines on us now and then.

Blessings to all of you caught in this latest storm, stay safe!
