Coumadin hasn't changed, nor have its risks grown larger. This is just a government CYA acknowledgement of the risks of any anticoagulant. You'll note they are adding warnings to OTC (over-the-counter) pain meds now, also, including aspirin.

I recently saw a warning on peanut butter that urged caution, because "product may contain nuts or nut oils."

Sheesh!

I'll ask my cardio if i can stop my daily dose and just have fish and chips instead..

Another one of those 'lowest common denominator' stickers....if you are taking the drug and don't know the risks then..........

I love those food labels, seen the 'this product may contain traces of nuts' on peanut butter too...absolute classic.

On kind of the same note, I've known about the rat poison for awhile now. However, I found this interesting tidbit regarding the origin of Warfarin and its name. Maybe we can just pick a bunch of clover, let it rot, and then eat a handful! Even though Warfarin is created, its origins are just as natural as fish.

"The first oral anticoagulant was developed by scientists at the University of Wisconsin in the 1930s. They noticed that cows that ate spoiled clover had a tendency to hemorrhage. They soon isolated an anticoagulant chemical from the clover and named it Warfarin® to honor the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation. The first use of Warfarin was for rat poison: rats would eat the tablets and bleed to death."

I'm waiting for the label that says "Do not take while submerged in water." ;)

I once bought an electric hair dryer that warned not to use it "in the shower".
Hmmm, my hair is wet in the shower.... :p

Minor hijack, thanks for the link.

It is sort of like publishing a study that showed that 98% of the people who had adverse events with warfarin did so after taking it with water. The conclusion then could be that warfarin interacts with warfarin in a harmful way.

President Eisenhower got warfarin in 1955. It took 51 years for the FDA tocome to this conclusion!!!

I had heard of the new black label, but I am curious as to how many people on coumadin/warfarin could be anticoagulated safely with fish oil??? Nathan's surgeon at the Mayo said that there may be hope someday for ASA only for the new generation mechanical valves, but he felt it would only be safe for those people who grew up on life long diet of mostly fish-he used eskimos as an example.

I also know a woman with a lupus coagulation disorder who had repeated GI bleeds related to ASA, and was switched to warfarin a few years ago with no further events. I found this a little odd, but I do understand that the two work differently.

fish oil

fish oil

Most people won't even admit that fish oil has any effect on anticoagulation...period..... Really bothers me that the news people don't know what the "L" they are talking about, yet they make recommendations.
Have to ignore this kind of "tripe."

You raise an interesting question. It is unlikely that fish oil will ever be proven to work. The reason is that no company stands to benefit from the research. Fish oil is widely available so who will fund it? The government? Not likely. The harsh reality of government funding is that unless you have a celebrity backing your cause it is not likely to go anywhere. This came from Tom Lantos (D) California, the ranking member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee speaking at a meeting I attended in DC where he was talking about funding for pulmonary hypertension research. Even with his "pull" he was not able to get anywhere with the bill until Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice became his celebrity - because she liked his granddaughter who has PH.
