I an earlier post I talked about my application to fill a vacancy on our local schoolboard. Tonight was the night, and what happened was kind of amazing to me. One of the Indian members nominated an Indian, and one of the Anglos nominated me. It looked like it was headed for a decision on racial grounds, a thought that had concerned me for days, and made me cringe inside.
Then I was asked what I felt was the most important issue the schoolboard would face. The gist of my answer was that we had to find a way to reconcile and live as neighbors, and to work together the way our kids already know how to do in their classrooms. There was more to it than this, and the words came so easily. The concerns of my heart just seemed to come together in a way I couldn't have planned. But here is the amazing part-after I had finished, the Indian board member who had nominated the Indian candidate withdrew the nomination and moved that I be appointed by unanimous vote, which I was. This was an incredibly gracious response. I am now a member of the schoolboard until the next election, which is right around the corner. This was probably the first significant decision by unanimous vote in 2 years. I hope we can have some more.
