Remember the tooth extraction I had scheduled? NIGHTMARE!!!!!

I just got home from my second hospitalization since having the tooth pulled on November 14th. I was put in the hospital on the night of the 15th when I had a reaction to the packing used after the extraction. They put me in the hospital since it appeared I had an infection and they wanted to guard against endocarditis. Was released on Saturday, the 18th, since the first set of blood cultures came back negative.

Got a call this past Tuesday telling me that the set of blood cultures done on Friday (the 17th) had grown "something" but it was inconclusive (whatever that means).   Tuesday afternoon I went back into the hospital for more blood cultures and IV antibiotics while the blood cultures cooked.

Hospital Thanksgiving dinner is not something to experience unless you are set on torturing yourself.

After 3 days of Gentamicin/Ceftriaxone cocktails (not mixed - maybe it would have been more fun), I was released today because the blood cultures are negative. No turkey leftovers for the weekend, no pumpkin pie waiting for me, no stuffing.

I am majorly depressed and my arms look like purple pin cushions. However, I am still around and asking for prayers that I don't get anymore calls about inconclusive blood cultures. I am staying out of the hospital and will let my teeth fall out on their own in the future.;) :D ;)

Hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving and are enjoying the leftovers.

Thanks for listening to me whine.

Gina-

How terrible! And scary! Do yourself a favor, and when you're feeling well enough, have a post Thanksgiving dinner with all the trimmings. At any rate, it's good that you are out of the hospital.

What a bummer!

Gina..
so sorry to hear of your ordeal! Glad that nothing conclusive 'grew' but sorry for all of your inconvienence non the less:(

Wish you could swing by here for some left overs..I have been sending them home with everyone.. Turkey, pumpkin pie, ..all the trimmings..

Get well and make sure that you get a Second chance Dinner somewhere!

So sorry you missed out on Thanksgiving dinner, Gina but happy the cultures all turned out negative!:) We have all the kids here and had a 31 lb bird which we are still working on so you are welcome to come by here to help- we're getting mighty sick of turkey!

Gina -

Sorry for all you've gone through!

You may have lost another tooth but you kept your fun sense of humor though!

Hang in there. Hoping you get no more bad or inconclusive test results too.

What an awful experience! You poor thing! Hopefully the infection will not materialize and you will be all better real soon. I ditto the idea to have your own belated Thanksgiving dinner and you can keep all the leftovers for yourself!!!!

Fingers & Toes are crossed for no more phone calls!;)

Take Care!

I am so sorry to hear about your Thanksgiving. I just PM'd you with all my whining about my problem, and then I see that you have had your own troubles. Who would have expected that much trouble with an extraction???
Hope you're feeling better and this is getting resolved. Let's keep our fingers crossed that Christmas will come and go with out any health issues.

Take it easy...at least it feels really good to sit outside and get some fresh air. We'll probably have a foot of snow next week at this time!

Thanks for all the good thoughts. I have been lucky since it's been so long since I have actually been an inpatient (a couple of ER visits but always went home). I forgot how great everything is once you are released. Little things like hugging my cats, watching the projection TV with all the satellite channels, going to the kitchen for snacks, sleeping without having my BP & temperature taken, visiting VR.com (the hospital supposedly has wireless but we couldn't get it to work or I would have whined earlier) ;) :D ;), even going to the bathroom without having to watch the IV line. I am in heaven right now. If I had Thanksgiving leftovers, I would be in hog heaven (and gain too much so maybe God was watching out for me in more ways than one).:)

I just looked up the antibiotics I was getting and I am really glad I did not have the computer in the hospital to look them up. I would have refused them. However, despite the list of side effects, I have found 2 powerful antibiotics I am not allergic to so something good came out of this. I am allergic to Vancomycin, Cipro and Clindamycin so now I have a "good" list as well as a "bad" drug list.

My depression is lifting and I am heading for a piece of pumpkin roll that 2 of my coworkers brought me yesterday. They took time out of their Thanksgiving to visit me. How great are some people?

Gina, that's awful! I hope that your Christmas is fabulous, to make up for the nasty Thanksgiving.

I am glad you are home..after that nighmare. If you don't mind posting..can you tell us..what type of reaction did you have? From the packing? I have had many extractions in the last 2 years..I always leave with the packing..but removed it soon..after I got home.It was always kinda bloody..but never had to repack them.. They (dentist) just said to replaced with a wet tea bag?.Luckly, never had to do that..but..I had pain..and dentist always scripted pain meds for me..and only had to take them..for the next 24 hours...then, the old thing of swishing with warm, salty water......I'm getting down with few back teeth left..at my age. and want to stay on top of things. Bonnie

Bonnie,

The dentist used a product called Gel Foam (I think that's the name). It was actually really jammed into the extraction site to prevent bleeding. I also was sent home with the gauze pads to keep on the site for seeping which were removed and replaced as needed. Didn't need the teabag but did get those instructions.

The extraction site got really swollen and red and the Gel Foam did not dissolve the way it was supposed to. Apparently my system just didn't react to it like "normal" people do. Since I didn't initially have a fever, it was decided that I had an allergic type reaction to some ingredient in the packing. After that, I started running a slight fever so they thought the reaction had caused an infection.

In retrospect, it may have been just an infection and not a reaction but, since it happened pretty quickly, they thought reaction rather than infection.

Not sure if that helps but that's all the info I have at least for now. I go back to the dentist next week and will be asking a few more questions.

What a bummer! I have extra turkey if you'd like me to send it

I hope you heal very soon!!!!

Oh Gina, that is a heck of a way to spend a holiday! But sure glad it didn't turn out to be anything worse.....those cultures could have grown something nasty, but didn't! Yay!

Isn't it annoying to get to the bathroom with IV's? When you can move around without them, it is like heaven.

Hopefully you will enjoy some Thanksgiving type goodies during the Christmas holidays....or even better ones!

Stay well.

GeeBee sorry to read about your less than smooth extraction, I just hope all the endocarditis worry has dissipated. :( Spending your holiday in hospital is no fun, can't say I know what Thanks Giving is all about though. I noticed they gave you Ceftriaxone this is what my endocarditis was treated with, you are the only other person on the site that has mentioned being treated with this drug, and it certainly worked on my Strep endocarditis. :)

Sounds like you had a lousy Thanksgiving this year. Please try to stay well for Christmas. So sorry to hear about all your troubles but so glad you are home and presumably healthy.

Gina,
I saw another post where you said something about hospitals and wondered what mischief you'd gotten yourself in to! So glad to hear that you're home and recovering with your OWN creature comforts around you. Our patients love getting to go home and not having us in there all hours of the night and day to check on them (althought i suppose that IS why they're in the hospital LOL!)
Take care of yourself, rest up this weekend!
Carolyn
