Hi Gang:

Just home from my annual Turkey Trot and in the spirit of thanksgiving and community, I thought I would start the message thread about planning for a 2007 VR.COM marathon relay. If you have been active in this group for a while, you will recall that we had our first ever VR.COM marathon relay on Memorial Day 2006 in Burlington, Vermont (there are separate threads in this forum about that).

I would like to organize the second such event for September/October 2007. We can start planning now to give people enough time to consider their calendar/travel for next year. There are two options in N.E. Ohio:

Option A is the Road Runner Marathon on Sat. Sept. 29, 2007. The website is http://www.akronmarathon.org/. The 26.2 miles is split among 5 runners (10K, 5K, 10K, 5K, 12.2K).

Option B is the Towpath Marathon which will be held on Sunday, Oct. 7, 2007. The website is http://www.towpathmarathon.net/ (note that they haven't changed the date yet on the website but I confirmed next year's date with the race director). Again, the course length is split among 5 runners (5.25m, 4.45m, 6.1m, 5m, 5.4m).

Let's have members review their calendar and look at the marathon websites and express their preferences. Here is a little help in weighing the options:

1. The RoadRunner Race on 9/29 is the larger of the two and has more of a "big race" excitement feel to it. I also know the founders of the race and given the larger profile of the race, I think there would be more publicity for our cause (raising awareness of heart defects etc.).

2. The Towpath Marathon is one of the most beautiful scenic courses in the country. It also flat whereas the RoadRunner is more like the Boston course. I can't say enough good things about the Towpath race and in fact, I participated in this year's marathon relay.

3. My wife and I will want to host a party for all the participants and their families/traveling companions. That will be Sat. evening and depending on what race we select, it will either be a pre-race celebration or a post-race celebration. I think the larger question is whether people traveling in can get in on Friday for the Roadrunner Race. What is easier for people? Coming in on Saturday and departing Sunday afternoon (Towpath) or coming in on Friday and departing Sunday (RoadRunner)? I can tell you that based on the Burlington experience, most of the fun is meeting the other heart patients and their families.

I also hope that the larger community that lives within the area would want to want to come. You don't have to be a runner to come out and share in the fellowship.

Let's get the discussion rolling!

Mark

Hi Mark -

I'd be up for either, but favouring the Towpath, I think. Put me on the team that needs a boat anchor!

A quick look at the dates and the Road Runner would work best for me at this point. The Towpath is the same day as my favorite St. George Marathon which I plan on running the last 10 miles.
So how was your run in the Turkey Trot?

Picking Dates

Picking Dates

Hi Bill and Kodi: Let's pick the date that accommodates the most people. Both races have a lot to offer so I will leave it up to majority vote. Today's run was great. I was pretty sore after the half marathon on 11/19 but we ran quick at the gym a bit. It's annual tradition of meeting some good friends and going out to run for 5 miles. What a difference a year makes! Last year, I could barely keep up; today we had to back a bit because of being in recovery mode from the half. I felt very thankful to be out there and running. I estimate that I have recovered about 40% of my presurgery fitness and I am hopeful that 2007 will bring another quantum step forward. Regards, Mark

Come on guys, just 3 responses. I thought I would be filling a spot on the "B" team at best. Make that commitment, get ready, and tuck it in behind the Kenyans. I think we can hang with them until we exit the elevator.

Philip

I'll run 15K; you guys just need to be really patient!

Next Year is a long way away

Next Year is a long way away

We have had lots of interest in this event since the Burlington Vermont relay. I will keep the post active since many of our members are infrequent visitors. Keep spreading the word. I also hope that we can get other members together for all kinds of events - not just marathon relays (bike rides, community walks etc.). One step at a time though.....

Lets Go With Sept. 29 Date

Lets Go With Sept. 29 Date

Gang: Just to help the discussion move along, I think Sat. Sept. 29 is going to be better for my family in terms of hosting a marathon relay next year. (Bill - I hope that doesn't disqualify you). See my earlier post - Option A is the Road Runner Marathon on Sat. Sept. 29, 2007. The website is http://www.akronmarathon.org/. The 26.2 miles is split among 5 runners (10K, 5K, 10K, 5K, 12.2K).

I think we have 4 so far:

1. Kodi
2. BillC hopefully
3. Philip
4. Mark
5. Who will be the fifth?

I am really hoping we get enough for a couple of teams! Contininuing to make very good progress with my running but I will post to my training blog about that. Mark

Mark - Sep 29 maybe a challenge for me, but doesn't rule me out just yet. Keep me penciled in for now and I will work on it.

LLJ - a must

LLJ - a must

Laura - you can be on our team anyday! We have five now! Let's get to work on assembling a second team and a couple of alternates in case somebody drops. Mark

Let's Get Going 2007 Fall Marathon Relay Teams!

Happy New Year to All:

It's time to start seriously planning for the Fall 2007 Marathon Relay. We have one team but I would like to encourage more participation - hopefully two teams!! as well as encourage site members to join us for fellowship etc.

For now, I will be reaching out by email to the five team members so we can start planning. Please keep the post current so we continue to attract interest.

Mark

Keep the Interest Coming!

Keep the Interest Coming!

Hey Runners:

We are up to 8 people now so we will be sure to have two teams filled out pretty soon - maybe a third? Please send me a private message if you think you will be interested. I will get additional news up soon. Regards, Mark

Update 2007 Marathon Relay

Update 2007 Marathon Relay

Update:

1. Right now, we at about 10 runners for the big day - Sept. 29. A number of runners still need to confirm details, availability but we have lots of time to work that out. For those of you that happen on this thread, know that we will be working on this for some time to come so don't worry that you are too late.

2. We have reached out to two other heart communities - the Adult Congenital Heart Association and Cardiacathletes both of whom are eager and supportive. We won't be using names of this group (VR.com) or any group for that matter without permission from each group. The goal is always to raise awareness and inspire, and create more interest etc.

3. We are planning a social gathering after the marathon relays on Sept. 29 - so if even if you are not a runner, please feel free to come cheer us on, meet other similarly situated individuals. Details will be available down the road on that.

4. If you are interested in participating, drop me a private message.

Best to all!

Mark

2007 Marathon Relay Update

2007 Marathon Relay Update

All:

My apologies for not being active on the site - life has been incredibly busy. We have 3 teams (12 runners in all) participating in the Akron 2007 marathon relay. We are also planning some social activities as well - last weekend in September (scroll up). 10 of the runners are coming from this site; 2 of the runners are coming from Cardiac Athletes. The runner traveling the farthest is Kodi - all the way from Arizona.

If you think you would like to meet the runners, please drop a private message. Nonrunners in the are encouraged to come cheer and to participate in the post-race party on Saturday afternoon/evening. Regards to all, Mark

I am getting really psyched!

I am getting really psyched!

Everything else on my calendar is finished for the season - except Akron. I am really looking forward to it. Not sure how the run legs will actually be assigned, but if Mark's original proposal holds, I'll be running against Laura in the first leg. And since she's getting off the meds, she'd be one more girl handing me my b*tt in athletic competition. But I've got a strategy:

No, I'm not training with it...I'm gonna hook it on to her at the race when she isn't looking! :p :D

I am really looking forward to meeting all of you nice folks. Hope we have spectacular weather.

The roads in Akron are painted with a blue stripe marking the course already. I had Chris at St. Thomas Hospital yesterday for a procedure and he wondered what the line was for. Looks like you all will be starting at St. Thomas or very near it.

It's okay with me if we start or finish near St. Thomas Hospital...we just want to have anyone end up in it. :D
Ross, are you going to be there to cheer us on? :)
