Hi Gang:
Just home from my annual Turkey Trot and in the spirit of thanksgiving and community, I thought I would start the message thread about planning for a 2007 VR.COM marathon relay. If you have been active in this group for a while, you will recall that we had our first ever VR.COM marathon relay on Memorial Day 2006 in Burlington, Vermont (there are separate threads in this forum about that).
I would like to organize the second such event for September/October 2007. We can start planning now to give people enough time to consider their calendar/travel for next year. There are two options in N.E. Ohio:
Option A is the Road Runner Marathon on Sat. Sept. 29, 2007. The website is http://www.akronmarathon.org/. The 26.2 miles is split among 5 runners (10K, 5K, 10K, 5K, 12.2K).
Option B is the Towpath Marathon which will be held on Sunday, Oct. 7, 2007. The website is http://www.towpathmarathon.net/ (note that they haven't changed the date yet on the website but I confirmed next year's date with the race director). Again, the course length is split among 5 runners (5.25m, 4.45m, 6.1m, 5m, 5.4m).
Let's have members review their calendar and look at the marathon websites and express their preferences. Here is a little help in weighing the options:
1. The RoadRunner Race on 9/29 is the larger of the two and has more of a "big race" excitement feel to it. I also know the founders of the race and given the larger profile of the race, I think there would be more publicity for our cause (raising awareness of heart defects etc.).
2. The Towpath Marathon is one of the most beautiful scenic courses in the country. It also flat whereas the RoadRunner is more like the Boston course. I can't say enough good things about the Towpath race and in fact, I participated in this year's marathon relay.
3. My wife and I will want to host a party for all the participants and their families/traveling companions. That will be Sat. evening and depending on what race we select, it will either be a pre-race celebration or a post-race celebration. I think the larger question is whether people traveling in can get in on Friday for the Roadrunner Race. What is easier for people? Coming in on Saturday and departing Sunday afternoon (Towpath) or coming in on Friday and departing Sunday (RoadRunner)? I can tell you that based on the Burlington experience, most of the fun is meeting the other heart patients and their families.
I also hope that the larger community that lives within the area would want to want to come. You don't have to be a runner to come out and share in the fellowship.
Let's get the discussion rolling!
