Charger or Cutlass?

Given that my new job (which I enjoy) has doubled my commute time along roads that are, unfortunately, generously dumped with salt during the snowy months, I may purchase another car to keep my '87 MC LS from the salt/snow. During my October road trip, I spotted a white 1987 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme at a dealership in Independence MO.

In the meantime, I loved driving the '06 Dodge Charger during that same road trip ... so much so that I'm toying with the idea of buying one, depending on what type of deal I can get....

I keep wavering back'n'forth, tho. The older car would be a "winter beater" only, of sorts, whereas a new Charger would also double as my personal road trip car (vs. renting). The older car would keep car payments (if any) to a minimum ... and insurance rates would be lower; the Charger, of course, would mean a new car payment ... and loftier insurance costs. Not sure if I really want to tempt fate with another older car. I've had EXCELLENT success with my '87 MC LS as my daily driver since I bought it in July 2003 (the '87 MC LS has been more reliable than my '00 mc LS, actually). Course, a new car could become a lemon, too.....

And, of course, I'd consider another '87 or '88 MC LS, '86 or '87 El Camino, late 70s Cutlass Supreme, late 80s Caprice Classic, late 70s Caprice Classic, '97ish Ford Thunderbird ... depending on condition (some rust/body damage is OK) and reliability....

Then again ... I could just stick with the '87 MC LS.....since I'd still like to get an '87 MC SS Aerocoupe and a '75 Caprice Classic convertible someday....

*sighs*

Decisions decisions decisions.....

Go with the Cutlass. I'm a GM person. Had Oldsmobiles, Pontiacs and currently drive a Yukon. Most of my family are also GMers:D

*chuckles*

And, here, I expected people would be telling me to go for the newer car. BUT, I agree....I'd love to have that Cutlass...we'll see ;).

I guess I'll weigh in on the side on caution. The older Cutlass (also known among my gear-head friends as a "Gutless") would be cheaper to purchase, but unless you know a lot about its individual history, it poses a risk in the dependability area. When it breaks down (and it will. . .) you will need to find a mechanic willing to work on a 20 year old car, and he will need to find parts for it. Maybe trouble, maybe not.

The Charger, OTOH, is a new (or at least newer) car, and thus is less likely to experience break-downs from normal wear and tear. It is also likely to be covered by a manufacturer's warranty. Parts will not be an issue, either. Yes, the purchase price is a chunk of cash, and the insurance will be higher, but it is less likely to leave you on the side of the road in a snowstorm on the way to or from work. . .

If it is a daily driver, I'd go for new(er).

New Job

New Job

I am pleased you finally have a new job, the old one sounded like it was at the toxic stage and poisoning you. Can't advise you and the cars none of them are sold an Australia. I did get the impression from all your posts that it was drive GM or catch the bus. :D Now we find you are a secret Dodge admirer.

Go for the GM. Otherwise you might get bored with no car to work on. Besides, you don't want these people to accuse you of being a poseur, do you??? :D

Well Cort as a GM engineer for 38yrs, I have to be loyal and say Cutlass.
Steve is right though, old (especially front wheel drive) cars are tough to repair, if you can find the parts.
Rich

Steve,

The mechanic end of things is no issue for me ... my mechanics work on all 5 of my MCs ... so, I'm sure they wouldn't have a problem with an '87 Cutlass. Heh...one of the guys keeps threatening to take my '76 MC from me ;). But, I hear ya on the Charger being newer and all. I just don't know :(.

OME,

Heh...that is so true. The old job was very toxic for me and my personality. This new one is fitting just well so far ;).

As for Dodge, it's not so much a secret admirer as Dodge is making what I want ... RWD. Chevrolet, on the other hand, keeps claiming that FWD is cheaper to build ... except, that doesn't explain why I can get a RWD 2006 Dodge Charger CHEAPER than a 2006 Lumina (er, "monte carlo"), which, of course, is FWD.

*shrugs*

Alonno,

He he he...hadn't even considered that possiblity ;).

And, my bud Rich, I hope you aren't taking my thoughts/feelings about GM/Chevrolet personally. I'm frankly tired of their lies and deceit.... But, I, too, am leaning a bit more towards the Cutlass ... always loved how those looked, too. BTW, tho, the '87 is actually RWD, just like my MCs.... It was '88 that GM (in it's "infinite" wisdom) switched the Cutlass to FWD.....

Cort,
That doesn't bother me in the least because I am very tired of all of it myself.
I keep hearing there may be more RWD's on the horizen, we shall see.
I forgot when they changed to FWD.
My last Cutlass was a 1977 triple black Cutlass Supreme, really cool car.
I also keep looking and hoping to see a brand new RWD MC.
Hopefully they have received the wake-up call, my pension depends on it !!

Which Car?

Which Car?

Cort my friend, As you know I still regret not buying that MC back in the 70s. But after 2 '58 Buick Specials, 1 '67 Datsun 1600 Roadster, 2 BMW 2002s, 1 '67 Pontiac Lemans, 1 '69 Pontiac wagon, 1 '76(?) Plymouth Feather Duster, 1 '81 VW Diesel Rabbit, 1 '84 VW Rabbit GTI, and having driven all sorts of other things, my favorite car is my '03 Honda Civic Si (made in the UK). So that's what I think you should get! And yes it is front wheel drive..:D

Good ... glad to know I'm not the only one ... he heh. I mean, I know I'm not ... but, sometimes it feels that way.....

Yeah, I know. I'm on a couple GM-related forums that keep talking about a RWD Impala in the future ... and how that will boost the company. Right ... by then, it may be too late.... Besides, Chevrolet talked RWD in the late 90s before the 2000 Lumina (er, monte carlo) debuted ... and that didn't happen.

*rolls eyes*

Oh sweet! A friend of mine on one of those GM-related boards was trying to get me to buy his '77 CS sedan for my winter beater ... but, while I was off line with the computer crashed, he ended up trading it for a late 70s Caddy coupe.....

Well, good luck :).

LOL! Yeah, I don't think a Honda Civic is in my future ... sorry bud ;). But, um, you have any pics of those cars you've owned? What a neat list :).

Rwd Gm

Rwd Gm

There may be RWD GM products in the North American market in the not to distant future. GM Australia has responsibility for developing the mass market RWD platform. North American GM senior execs have been driving the recently released Australian four door version of this. Strange as it may appear GM Australia builds RWD cars and has been exporting these to the Middle East branded as Chevs for years. :)

Scrape both ideas and get one of these, if you can find one......

Ya know ... that's a great idea.... If only I could find one for sale ;).

*nods*

Yep, I know. But, GM/Chevrolet has been "talking" RWD for years ... and have not produced. So, I'm not holding out any hope......
