So, I'm watching Extreme Home Makeover and it's about a 12 year old born with a hole in her heart. The parents make the comment that because it's a congenital condition that the insurance companies consider it pre-existing and aren't paying. They mention that one of her surgeries was over $500k. Has anyone heard this before?? What about someone born with a BAV??

i'm not watching it but if they didn't have insurance when she was born or whenever the CHD was detected, I could see that happening

That's the most ridiculous thing I have heard of yet in the insurance business. Even if it were pre-existing, I believe all insurance companies have a pre-set time frame for which they exclude pre-existing conditions (usually one year). Perhaps the parents changed insurance companies just prior to surgery? There has got to be more to the story.

Speaking of Insurance....

Has anyone tried to write Long Term Care Insurance post OHS?
We have great medical but are now thinking of trying to add Long Term and I suspect they may not be interested in covering me.

We'll get it for DH though.

Well, I don't know about any of this, but PLEASE, everyone....be sure that you tell your insurance companies that you are having these huge operations. Many need pre-authorization. Even if the doctor has taken care of it....it's so important to check with the insurance people.

I believe I have heard that the moment the baby enters the world it is covered right away in the family plan. If the family has one. However, insurance companies have gotten so powerful they make their own rules these days.
