Hi all,
Since Chloe's birthday is on halloween and she wants a party at home this year, I've agreed to do a proper halloween party for her.

Its now struck me that this is pretty soon and I need to sort out what games to play with them, food to do etc etc with a halloween theme.

I have bought loads of decorations and party bag stuff but am a bit stuck on what to play. I have a couple of ideas but since Halloween is a much bigger thing in the states than over here (although it seems to be a lot bigger here the past couple of years too!) I wondered if any of you knew of any games suitable for 7 year olds that I could play with them???

I'd be really grateful for any ideas!
Thankyou!!

Hi Emma:

My daughter has an October birthday too, so we've been down that road before.

One really fun game is to pair the kids up and give each pair a roll of toilet paper. Have one be the mummy and the other wraps. Everyone has fun and the first team finished is declared the winner.

Everyone always loves a pinata and a spider is an easy one to make on the cheap. Blow up a balloon and fashion a hanging-plant-style holder for it with string or twine. Cover it in strips of newpaper dipped in a gloppy mixture of flour and water or liquid laundry starch (not the spray kind), working around the strings. Do several layers letting it dry in between layers then paint it black and attach legs made of construction paper or what-have-you. Put funky eyes and a halloweenish hat on it and fill it with candy from a hole in the top. Hang it and do the pinata thing.

A cool invitation we did once was to buy a bunch of cheap white hankies and write the invite info around the border, then place the hanky over a tootsie pop and tie it on in ghost fashion and give it two eyes and an "oooh" mouth.

One time we did a Survivor party where the kids were separated into teams and given tasks to complete--you could do Survivor Halloween. I wrote up intros to each task and read them aloud to the teams, ascribing great importance to each task (we did a save the rainforest theme, but you could have them save themselves from becoming zombies or help the skeleton find his bones). The first team to complete each task is given a totem (which is a roll of toilet paper wrapped in brown paper with a spooky face drawn on it) to impale on an empty totem pole (bamboo stuck upright in the ground) that is surrounded by a wide perimeter of cheap bamboo torches--everyone gathers around after each event to see the team awarded the totem and place it on the pole. At the end, when the totem pole is full, everyone dances and chants around the pole (this was spontaneous at our party) and they're/the skeleton's saved. This works well because they get to compete, but they're working toward a common goal and everyone wins. Then you can unwrap the totems and do the mummy game (above). (I actually worked the planting of bulbs into this game--to help replenish the rainforest--maybe yours could ward off evil spirits.)

That's it off the top of my head...

Bobbing for apples...is still a hit. We had a party for the kids last Halloween. Most of them ended up practially swimming in the apple water. :D Oh....not to mention.....that was an "indoor party"!

Bobbing for apples is the classic Halloween game but, if you don't want to deal with the mess of all the water, there is a variation where the apples are tied to long strings (I don't really remember what we tied the strings to - something overhead. ) The kids hold their hands behind their back and try to eat the apple just by biting at it. Of course, as soon as they try, the apple goes flying. Eventually, they figure out to brace it against their shoulders but it's fun to play and to watch. Another one we used to play (although 7 is probably a little young for this) is trying to peal an apple all in one piece and then throwing the apple peal over your shoulder - it's supposed to fall into the initial of the person you are going to marry. (-: Have a great party! Kate

Just wanted to let you know one of my granddaughters birthdays is Halloween and she will also be 7 this year. My daughter got a Halloween pinata one year and the kids really loved it. Of course we did this outside and watched the kids closely while they took turns hitting it with a plastic baseball bat.

Our grandson's birthday is on Halloween also! He will be four years old.

I don't have any game suggestions though. However, Jackson will be a dragon and his sister Emma will be a princess dressed in pink (but she'll probably be wearing her pink cowgirl boots - it's a season of her life dedicated to those boots).

Have fun Chloe and kids.

PJ's idea is great! My first thought was of a pinata too. There used to be a grocery on the edge of downtown Fort Worth (Texas) that catered to Hispanics. Had lots of pinatas hanging from the ceiling year-round. Pinatas are very, very big in states along along the U.S.-Mexico border.

You could probably get around painting the spider by taping, gluing or pasting lots of pieces of crepe paper or tissue paper. That would give the illusion of hairy spider "fuzz" on the critter.

When I had a Camp Fire youth group, we did a pinata in our front yard for the kids. Also put some money (small coins in it). Put a tarp underneath to make sure all the coins were gathered up -- so as to keep them from being sucked up by our lawnmower.

Absolutely! Just use crepe or tissue paper for the last layer.:)
