Guess I am the oddity. I ate little for two days and them my appetite returned to near normal. I eat less but have found nothing that does not taste good. I would love to buy a bucket of fried chicken, bowl of gravey and plate of biscuits from KFC:D but my wife has me on baked/grilled fish and chicken (which she has had me on for 20 years which I guess is why I had no blockages). Good luck to your Tom. I am sure your appetite will return.

Ditto what everyone else said. It will come... Just eat things anything you're in the mood for. Anyone know exactly what causes our taste buds to freak out after the surgery? I remember after the surgery everything I ate tasted so weird and crummy.

Hi Tom

My husband, Tyce, had absolutely no appetite post op. He, too, was anemic and was told by the surgeon that that's perfectly normal for about 3 weeks to a month. By the end of two weeks, though, his appetite had returned and his anemia was basically gone. I would make him anything he wanted to eat.....or thought he wanted to eat.....and literally MADE him eat some of it. This from a man who has a gigunda appetite and never gains an ounce. He did like juices and popsicles and pudding, though, which was a help.

It will just take time and you'll be back to normal.

Watch the ensure, though.

Evelyn

I also was colder than usual for several weeks.

Hello Adrienne, did your problem with cold just go away, or did you take or do something, this still affects me. charles4

Hot/cold flashes...

Hot/cold flashes...

Charles,
They say that our internal thermostat is thrown off for a little while after surgery. I went through periods of time where I would be freezing one minute, and then sweating the very next. This is normal...from what they told me. I'm almost 3 weeks post-op now and mine has pretty much leveled off...though I still have periods every now and then where I get cold for no apparent reason (had one last night as a matter of fact). I think it goes away at some point and I don't think there's any need to worry.

I had appetite problems for awhile post-op. I lost about 24 pounds in 1 month and looked very gaunt, like death warmed over, you might say. I gained back a little in time.
I still have some problem with certain foods not tasting right (for instance, chicken-fried steak tastes like cardboard; I have to add lime & sweetener to water or it tastes metallic).

I also had problems feeling cold and still do. I wear jackets, even in the summer. I love summer heat now. When others complain about the summer heat, I'm pretty much comfortable. I've learned to adapt to it -- wear warmer clothing, long sleeves, socks, etc.

I currently am 5 days post op an everything I eat tastes different. Especially food that is not as natural. Fruits taste different but not as much different as other foods to me. Everything too me tastes extremely salty--everything!
Im snacking just a little and hoping my apetite will get better soon! Your above posts have been helpul! I too go from being very shivery to sweating to times.

feeling cold, loss of appetite are part of my problems too!! I lost 7 pounds so far! I believe this is all normal.

Feeling cold

Feeling cold

I typically run real hot and my wife and I are constantly fighting over the thermostat. She like it about 10 degrees hotten then me. Now since my surgery its reversed. I want it at about 78 in the house or I start to feel cold. When we go for our 5 min walks I bundle up even wen the temp is 65. I am sure its a temp thing.

I was cold after I came home and my taste buds were not working right. In a few weeks though, both the appetite and internal temperature came back to the voracious appetite and running hot temperature that I had before the surgery. It continues to be a struggle keeping the weight down. Hopefully, it all works th same for you. Give it time...

I still easily get cold and frequently bundle up in several layers, with a scarf for good measure.
Once I finally get warm, I stay warm. My internal thermostat actually seems to "stick" a bit  .

Feeling Cold

Feeling Cold

Hi everyone,

Yes, I also feel cold. Especially in the evening, and outside. I feel colder than usual. I complained a couple of times to my cardio, he said it did not have anything to do with the surgery, but I disagree. Your body has been under extreme trauma, and I think this is one of the after effects, for some people. Also I had some anemia, and complication with fluid around the heart.

Good luck to all! Kathy

I'm so glad this thread was started. I thought it was just me feeling cold all the time since my surgery. I don't remember this from my first OHS so maybe it is more pertinent to valvers. My friends brought me a lovely, cuddly bed jacket in the hospital and I so appreciated it. Three blankets didn't keep me warm enough but that jacket was wonderful. I was anemic in the hospital but haven't been tested since I'm home so don't know if I still am. I'm careful to be eating a very healthy diet so hopefully that and a daily multi vitamin will be helpful.

As for taste, it took me a good 6 weeks before food started to return to a normal taste. The only thing in the first weeks that tasted close to anything normal was for some reason pork.
I tried a hamburger and it was just so horrible I didn't try another one for 2 months. I tried turkey, it was not a whole lot better, so I ate chicken noodle soup, some pork and not a whole lot more till things returned to normal. That is probably how I lost over 10# lol.

As for feeling cold I am over a year and a half out of surgery and I still have times when my extremities are cold as all get out. Now mind you I was the type that wore a short sleeve shirt all winter long. I find myself in the winter putting on 2 pairs of socks at times and wearing a sweater all the time.

My wife complains that my once warm feet are no longer that way and she can't use them to warms hers at night lol.

Yes, my appetite was poor

Yes, my appetite was poor

but it returned in a big way. so have some dove bars and enjoy! :D

This is a very common thing after surgery but it can also be partially caused by medication. If you are taking meds check with your pharmacistabout side affects.
