hey guys,

kinda had a rough night tonight

I thought I was doing OK, I had gone a day without the xopenex, I had a low grade fever, but I thought it was no big deal I could have taken the xopenex this AM, but I didnt,

I decided to take it on the way into the kitchen at work because I was pretty out of breath, and my chest was tight, dumb idea! I started to feel better, but within 20 mins or so, I started feeling really crappy, more out of breath, my heart was racing, I was light headded, and my chest got tight again. I took my pulse and could barely count it, it was like 130s. I sat down, tried a valsalva, tried holding my breath, coughing, nothing helped, I decided to go to the ER. I told a few ppl in the kitchen, went into the locker room, got changed back into street clothes, I had to sit down twice in the locker room, I had someone walk to the ER with me, had to stop and sit once on my way to the ER, and oonce we just stopped and stood. I got to triage, and the receptionist did some paperwork, called a nurse over, and had me in triage within a minute, triage nurse took my pulse, and didnt even bother doing a BP, sent me straight back to a bed in a curtain area with a crash cart, nurse hooked me up to the crash cart monitor, put me on oxygen, and ran an EKG right off, this was all within 5 mins of getting to the ER. Luckily I was just in sinus tach with PVCs, by the time I got to the monitor my rate was down into the one teens, and my EKG was relatively normal , and my BP was stable. they monitored me, the doc came in, and listened to me, my breath sounds were a little diminished so they did a chest X-ray to rule out pneumonia. no pneumonia, just nasty bronchitis.

they prescribed me prednisone, and a z-pak for the bronchitis, there isnt much else I can do w/out taking B2 bronchodialators, which obviously arent a good idea, the doc wants me to just try 1 or 2 puffs of the xopenex if I have to take it, but other than that, rest fluids and tylenol.

on another note, I think I baffled/blindsided this doc, either that or he hasnt seen much, I started crying when we were talking about how to treat this, I was telling him how frustrated I was, and how little it takes to put me over the edge with getting out of breath and feeling like crap, he basically didnt show much compassion, barely changed the look on his face, didnt say much of anything, the nurses were much better about it, one even wanted to listen to my heart for the hell of it, I let her, because she actually gave a crap about ME,

I guess I cant really blame the doc, he works in a small town ER, doesnt see that much of this stuff, doesnt have much concept of what it's actually like, and his PT next to me was telling him that he didnt understand what an allergic skin reaction was (this Pt was "dying" with itching, burning and "pain" from a reaction he was having and insisting the doc had no clue what it was like  ) and the patient that came in after him was moaning in pain, she had pleurisy, but it sounded like she was gonna die the way she was moaning and crying  he just seemed pretty cold, I think he was sick of the frequent fliers/hypochondriacs, or he was having a bad day

anyways, its time for bed now, just thought I'd update

Yup, those bronchodialators can send the heart for a run.....better to avoid them.
My first year post op I had a few of those same trips to the ER, not fun at all.
Try to rest more, ok?
Hugs, Bina

Morgan,

Sorry you had to endure that..... Thoughts/prayers coming your way, of course.

Morgan..sorry to hear about the rough night in the ER. Those visits are never a good thing.
I would imagaine the doc is overwhelmed with flu and flu related illness this year. Seems to be a particularly bad year.
Take care hon.. and get plenty of rest!

Morgan hope you are feeling better, take care of yourself, sending my best wishes.

update

hey guys,

quick update, I am doing ok, went in to get checked out today, lungs sounded wet/wheezy, its definitely bronchitis, probably viral, since its not really responding to the Z-Pak, he doesnt want me to use the xopenex unless I need to, so at this point its rest, fluids, finish the z-pak, tylenol with codeine at night, he doesnt want me to finish the prednisone, and he wants me to keep in touch with the nurses if things arent changing/getting worse, he said that there is really not much else he can do right now with it, so I am just gonna drink alot and sleep alot, hopefully the tylenol with codeine will help me get plenty of sleep.

side note, doesnt it drive you nuts when a nurse doesnt read your chart? I was talking to her about how when I went into the ER I was in sinus rhythm. she looked at me like I had a third eye smack in the middle of my forehead she had no clue about my history, I had to tell her about it, this nurse also tried to tell me that the only difference between albuterol and xopenex is that xopenex is albuterol with a different propellant. . . NOT!!!! LOL I looked at her and told her that I was a respiratory therapy student then she looked at me and made some comment about how resp students dont go that in depth into the cardiovascular system, and that she wondered how I knew what I was talking about. I love ths particular trait , and swear to NEVER commit this crime as an RT

well, I ought to go and rest, hopefully I'll be able to eat something, only thing I've eaten is a couple string cheese today to have something to eat with the pred this AM
