Hello-

I have been doing low impact cardio for the past couple weeks and feel great. I had right thoracotomy mitral valve repair on 01/30/2012. Today, I did 10 minutes of abs and it hurt near the incision. How long does it take for muscles that have been cut to heal? I know working out is very healthy for the muscles to heal but I don't want to push it.

Thanks-

Laura

It takes about 4 -8 weeks for severed/cut muscled to mostly heal. Rule of thumb is to push through minor and even medium discomforts, but never to push through pain. I think you had your surgery done end of Jan, right? This could be ok time to apply some lotions, stretch lightly, stretch some more, stretch even more and move things around. Get muscles in all upper body areas nice and pliable and you will see exercises feeling better. Yoga could be great to get everything pliable again. I would highly recommend it.
