My husband went through the pre-admission procession today for his heart cath which is Monday, Feb 11. Depending on what they find Monday, the surgery is Tuesday or Wednesday. He's pretty nervous and still in denial as to whether this is really necessary. One question: I've never heard any statistics on how serious or dangerous AVR is, compared to bypass surgery which seems to be a very common procedure. I've only heard of one or two valve replacements (other than on this forum). Thanks for any input.

Risk of valve surgery?

Risk of valve surgery?

I had mitral valve replacement at age 72 and was told that risk of death within 30 days post op was 5%. I think its less for aortic valves and for younger patients. Those are pretty good odds. I was home the morning of the fourth post op day.
