Yesterday in one of our threads (can't find it now) the question of muscles at sternum came up and one of us said "I thought there was only skin and bone at the sternum and no muscle" so I went to my reliable source and here's his answer.

Dr Rich - a discussion over in valvereplacement.com has brought up a question. A couple people say they had muscles cut getting to the heart - another says ' didn't think there are any muscles going in through sternum - just skin and bone. Which is right? Thanks for your knowledge. God bless -

A major advantage of doing a median sternotomy is that muscles do not have to be cut. But many heart operations are performed using a thoracotomy - an incision between the ribs - where muscle is cut. The appropriate incision depends on the type of heart surgery being performed. The sternotomy is far more common today.
