finally done it, ran 5 miles. haven't been able to run this distance for three
years. just forced myself to run slowly....average mile was 9:07.

thinking maybe should take a week off to rest.....

It looks like you have your endurance back now. It's speed that probably needs fine tuning after this. Try doing some short fast bursts (30 seconds) during a normal training run just to get the stride length out to where it ought to be.

I too am a runner. I am 50 and I am scheduled for a May 4 surgery to replace my aortic valve. I too have chosen the Edwards perimount magna. Did you by chance compare this valve to the Medtronic mosaic. I would appreciate any comments about these two valves. Keep up the good recovery.
 
Good job! I don't know about a week off...if you want to, sure but a few days should recharge your batteries! :D

Rick, welcome, I read your post on valve types...you'll see in my sig. that I have an Edwards also....you can read my story on the Edwards patient web site. I don't think you can go wrong with either Medtroncis or Edwards...pick the one you and your surgeon are most comfortable with.
 
I agree with Tom, a week off is quite a while to rest. I'd do some slower shorter runs.

Rick, Like Tom I also have an Edwards....it hasn't caused me any problems so far. I just wish I had been a good candidate for the larger valve so I could be fast like Tom again. :D
 
i've been exercising pretty consistently since avr mid-january. finally got
the 5-miler done, have been slowly getting better times per mile and for
5-km runs. and with bike riding, am up to 100-miles here in the mountains.

i think every now and then your body needs a break, not just to recharge,
but to heal all those little injuries that you don't even realize you have. i'm
hoping a week should do it. cut out the running and cycling, replace with
situps and pushups and light weights.

didn't do a great deal of research on specific mech valve types. only
enough to know i wanted a meat one. did not want to deal with warfarin
(yes, i know...), and just knew i'd get a loud clicker if i went that route.
 
You do need to take atleast a week off!!
I'm sure that 100 mile ride just 3 months post-op

2.5 miles downhill and 2.5 miles back mostly uphill, with a Starbucks coffee halt in the middle

Oh, I do so miss my coffee runs. I went totally decaf several years ago because of irregular beats but for the longest time I had a Sunday morning routine that went like this.

Run 1.5 miles down the road to a coffee shop
get a 20 oz regular, milk, no sugar,
walk for about a half mile while I savor the ambrosia
then continue on running for another 5 or 7 miles.

About one mile after finishing the drink there was a path into the woods near Albany airport where I could make a quick pit stop if needed. Who am I kidding, it's always needed after 20 oz. By then the caffeine had kicked in and I would glide effortlessly the rest of the way. Oh yeah, it was always sunny and warm on my coffee runs at least in my memories. Sigh.
 
after a week's rest, did a two miler this morning. cut half a minute off, now
two-mile time is 16:36 with hr at 160. that's 85-90% max hr.

next week maybe a couple days of speed work.

this weekend, if it doesn't rain (monsoon season soon?) i think i'm ready to
take the dirt roads to the local villages in the mountains.

hot and humid at the track today. decided to run a fast one mile.
well, relatively fast.

even having to dodge obstacles (slow running students, discuses,
three-wheel delivery truck), still managed to complete the mile in 7:19,
which is pretty close to my last marathon average mile time. so only
have to do this 26 times consecutively.

heart rate at the final turn was 180, which according to the charts
is my hr max.

afterwards, still had some energy. did 25 push-ups before i found the
courage to try the pull-up bar. i did a grand total of......one. hooray.
several minutes of hanging on the bar, but only one real pull up.
it didn't hurt, but definitely felt the strain. oh, and the arm muscles
have seriously shrunk.

curiously, the chinese students commented on my wonderfully developed
pecs. haha, said i, these are just nanmantou(*).

(*man-boobs, or literally male steamed dumplings)
 
a couple days if you count walking the hallways and climbing the stairs in the hospital.
lots of walking, the poor little nurses could barely keep up.

a little over a week, if you count 1/4m and 1/2m sessions on the treadmill at
the hotel once discharged.

started slowly, doing longer walks on the beach after two weeks.

first real exercise was at 30 days, managed 3x600m at the uni track.
 
You can keep your hot weather. My preference is cool. I ran a 5K yesterday at 75F/24C and it was unbearable. Understand, we still have snow piles in the shade under trees in upstate NY and I've been training in 40F/4C temps for the past month. So to step into an oven at 75F was too much for me. I ran the 1st mile in 9:15 and hit a wall of heat. Had to back way off and finished in 31:03 10min/mi avg. It remains hot today, probably 80F/26C at noon and I may just melt. I think the perfect running temp is 50F/10C.
