44 years old athletic need AVR within month

Hey Kurt, I am 44 year old that is just over 17 months post op from AVR and repair of ascending aorta. I went with On-X valve for very similar reasons as other folks.. once at this dance is plenty. I was very active before surgery; Ironman triathlon in 2006, couple of marathons, a few century...

Be patient, it will get better Be patient, it will get better I am about six months post op from AVR and anuerysm repair. I know exactly how you feel. I thought the pounding/pulsing/clicking in my head would never go away... it does. For the first few weeks I dreaded going to bed at night...

Not trying to jinx myself but....

My surgeon said he implanted my on-x valve in a way that it could easily be replaced in the future. An an example where I would need to go to a tissue valve would be if I developed some condition that prevented me from taking coumadin. He said it would be less complicated procedure second time...

    Mostly for the guys

This very similar to my experience. Had to pee after angio with nurse holding pressure on sight and wife holding urinal.. After surgery the catheter makes a non-issue. Once catheter is pulled it is slightly shy and uncomfortable the first couple of times (running warm water over my hand...

    I'm back

I kinda felt like I had the flu real bad. hard to get comfortable. It is not fun but it does pass. You are still feeling the effects of anesthesia on the 2nd day so you just don't notice I guess.

    I'm back

We got home yesterday about 1:30pm. Surgery went well; first cut at 9:41am and in ICU at 6:30pm. New ON-X valve, root and partial replacement of the arch. 3rd and 4th days post op were grim (never fully appreciated the "watch out for the bus" saying until now) but I have felt steadily better...

    Valve replacement timing

I don't know you specifics but am surprised at the 5%. Dr. Chen told me more along the lines of 1-2% and I had heard the same elsewhere. 5% is something they quoted for a valve re-do; if you go tissue and it wears out. When discussing my issue with friend who is Dr. he told me not too lose...

    Valve replacement timing

I live in Chattanooga (about 2 hours north of Atlanta) and there is one surgeon in town that does enough aneurysm repairs to make me comfortable (3-4/month). He is good surgeon with very good reputation. The bad part is that he leaned heavily toward tissue valve and did not really want to talk...

    Valve replacement timing

Thanks for your input. A bit more history about me. I have know about the BAV for about 20 years. In May of 2006 I was about to compete in an Iron Man Triathlon competion in Couer d'Alene Idaho and thought it may be a good time to see how the BAV was doing. I have a friend that is a cardio...
