What is Life Like After OHS?

I had a AVR on 12/2/15 and feel great and do enjoy life at high levels. I had a mechanical valve pit in and the balancing of Coumadin has been very smooth. After the 4-6 week recovery time, I really feel like life is better and I am able to workout at a higher level than before. Life can be...

How long were you sore for?

I started feeling really good at week 12. The difference for me between the 9th week and the 12th week was pretty drastic. Hang in there, be patient as you can't do much to heal your sternum, other than give it time. What type of shape were you in prior to surgery and what is your current age?

    Mechanical Valve Replacement

I ate a considerable amount of greens before surgery and continue to eat the same amount post surgery. I am on 10mg daily of Coumadin and my doctor told me she will adjust the dosage to my diet and not the other way around. She wants me eating healthy, which includes vegetables. Do not fear...

Tomorrow marks 14 weeks since my surgery on December 2nd to replace my bicuspid aortic valve with an On-x valve. I wanted to provide a brief update to provide hope for those who will be having surgery in the near future or are currently recovery. At age 34 and healthy going into the surgery...

    Knots in back/shoulders

The massage last week seemed to really work. I agree about the posture, I think I was really protecting my sternum for awhile. Feeling much better this week.

    Knots in back/shoulders

Thanks for the replies. I am scheduled for a massage on Thursday. I think I will make this a regular thing until I can stretch more and complete activities like yoga. I think the reaction and cause of knots is poor posture and the reaching and even light lifting of items around the house. We...

    Knots in back/shoulders

Has anyone dealt with knots in the back/shoulder area? I am 5 weeks post AVR and the worst pain yet has been from this knot by my left shoulder blade. Anyone have any success getting relief?

    Back into the fray.. 1 / 8 / 16

You will be fine and in good hands. Dr. Stewart is amazing and his nurse practioners were very helpful. He did my AVR (on-x) on 12/2/15. Take a deep breath, relax and know that you are in good hands. The other question would be...why wait. Go get better and you will be feeling great by...

And the count down begins! !

You will do great. I sit here right now 1 month to the date since my surgery and I actually, in a weird kind of way, enjoyed the process, maybe because I am just in amazement what modern medicine can do and how one can get a new lease on life. Embrace the process and keep a positive mind set!

    Golf?

Thanks for all the feedback. Given the weather in Cleveland, I think i can be extra patient and give it at least 90 days before I might find myself at a heated driving range.

34 Years Old - Mechanical Valve

Oh and for those worried about Coumadin...so far so good and something you shouldn't stress about. This might change over the coming years, but my initial impression is that it's not a big deal.

34 Years Old - Mechanical Valve

At the 26 day mark post surgery and am feeling great. Walking about 3 miles per day for about an hour, sleeping great and overall returning to normal. Somewhere around the 2-3 week mark, I saw a vast improvement. Visited my cardiologist, Dr Prieto at the Cleveland clinic and she gave me the...

34 Years Old - Mechanical Valve

At age 3, I was diagnosed with congenital bicuspid aortic stenosis and have been monitored at least once a year for the past 31 years. On August 28th I was told the time has come for replacement. After much research and consultation with my surgeon, I have decided on the On-x. Dr. Stewart and...
