    My official post op thread

Hi Sood! So happy your recovery is going smooth. I'm at the month mark and my only issue, as far as I know is that my nerves are reconstructing and I can feel pain in my upper body muscles! Ouch, but nothing serious. You monitor your progress quite well, I think I can learn a thing or two from you!

    Big Question - Concerning Mediastinitis

Thanks Rachel. I talked to my doc's office and they said if it were this, it would continually get worse, and since I've continually gotten better, it couldn't be so. My fear was something lying hidden, but it seems this is very seldom the case. The Internet is sometimes our greatest friend...

    Sternum Popping

Thanks everyone! I agree, it's got to be the cartilage. My surgeon seemed to think so, but did say try to avoid activities that make it pop, unfortunately as Gerry points out, sometimes it's a real simple thing that makes it happen.

    Chills/Night Sweats after Three Weeks

Everyone is different for sure. I got to a point of worrying about stuff it really affected my psyche, and since positive thinking has a lot to do with our health, this can be bad. My surgeon's nurse practitioner, whom I've grown to respect a lot, gave me this bit of advise. She said my job is...

    Chills/Night Sweats after Three Weeks

I did recommend to talk to the doctor above, so what would you disagree with Gail and Ski? I did about each issue I had when I had it, which I describe above by describing what the surgeon's office said to me. But worrying won't help, could be perfectly fine. Don't panic, but yes, talk to your...

    Big Question - Concerning Mediastinitis

Hi all, Ok, so I have done the cardinal sin and been searching online and now I scared myself, perhaps completely unnecessarily. Which is why I bring this topic to you. I have had several what can be seen as normal situations occur post surgery. I had the slightly elevated fever that was...

    Chills/Night Sweats after Three Weeks

Oh! And yes, I was also told to avoid NSAIDs. Told to stick to Tylenol as it's the least interactive with Coumadin.

    Chills/Night Sweats after Three Weeks

I had a fever after getting home and also night sweats. I did not have an infection. Is your temp over 101? That seems to be the magic number as I was told if it goes over that, I needed to go in right away. Apparently, postpericardiotomy syndrome is the most common cause per many websites. If...

    Hiccups during recover

Sorry about the hiccups. I had a low grade, less than 101, sometimes to 100 though, for two weeks post leaving the hospital. It subsided on its own. Some do have fever after surgery for reasons other than infection, but its better safe than sorry.

    Sternum Popping

I did, met with him today. He says likely its cartilage, but wants me to keep an eye on it. I was just curious if others have experienced something similar.

    Sternum Popping

Hi all.... I am experiencing some popping around the sternum, but I don't think it is the sternum itself. Anyone else experience this in the healing process? Any good info?

Glad it went well! I wish you a speedy recovery!

Some more info on my surgery

Sood, probably better they did it regardless... you are young and strong and it's very manageable. I am a month post op and pretty much streamlined on diet and Coumadin and it's rather simple, honestly. Welcome to the other side (I'm a rookie too though :)

    Valve size

Hi all, after my surgery my surgeon told me he was able to get a larger mechanical valve in. Why is a larger valve better?

Yes, good advise. I'm trying to get a meter of my own through insurance now. I'm hoping they'll cover it, but, if not, I may just buy one. I can certainly see the benefit.

Good stuff! Yes, very true about the Internet. I can email my doc too, but at the moment I am still stabilizing my INR with a home nurse. I won't know who to call except my doctor after I'm done with home health care.

    Travel

Hi all, I had my surgery on 5 April and am about to return to work. Once I do, I am expected to travel for several weeks to the other side of the world. I have my locations to get checked, but my question to you guys is if we are to take our Coumadin at roughly the same time every day, but in...

Someone pour me a tall one?

Awesome inputs! Thank you all. Dick, love the beer story! That's great!

Someone pour me a tall one?

Hi all, ok, what's the ruling on having a beer for the newbie (ie. me)? Is it ok to indulge in a beer or two or is that way too risky? I'm in no position to actually do so at the moment, 3 weeks out of surgery. But, I wanna be prepared for the future when no doubt the situation arises. Thanks all!
