    10 miler

Ran 10 miles on Saturday about 10 week post AVR. Cardiologist cleared me to do everything but high weight low rep lifting. I think a spring marathon is within reach! I just have to get my hip flexors to cooperate.

    Roche Diagnostics Out of Network

My cardiologist ordered a home test kit from Roche Diagnostics. However, I received a call from them saying they are out of my BCBS of Alabama network and that I would have to cover 50%. Has anyone had this problem before? Also, is anyone using the kit but not reporting results to the testing...

    Running: Post Op Day 26

Yesterday I ran a total of 1.6 miles... 1.1 of it at once at an 8:24/mile average pace. On top of that we tacked on another 4.8 miles of walking. Also, the cardy has cut my beta-blocker dose in half. I was having a little partial syncope when standing up, especially from squatting. I'm a...

    6 miles on post-op day 19

My wife and I did 6 miles yesterday (post-op day 19) which was comprised of .75 miles of running (at a 9:20/mile pace) and the rest a brisk walk for a total of 6 miles. The running did tax my lungs in a good way. I could tell they were getting worked in a way that will help them improve. I...

    Right Anterior MiniThoracotomy for AVR!!

This is THE way to do an isolated AVR. There is really no reason to do a sternotomy or mini-sternotomy anymore. The key is finding a surgeon that has enough experience with this approach. Mine had done 500 or more.

Cleared to Run 15 Days Post Op!!!

I had my follow up with the surgeon yesterday. He said everything went exactly the way it was supposed to. He said "you can start running, just don't go crazy and ease into it." So I did 5 miles of walk 4 minutes/run 1 minute. According to the Garmin GPS that amounted to 1.4 miles of running...

    Day 5 update

Post mechanical AVR... Slept a solid 7 hours last night which was my first night at home. Only woke up to go to the bathroom. Went for a 1.25 mile walk and could have kept going. Ate a great breakfast fixed by my awesome wife. (she is doing great with the whole thing). We are doing another...

Post Op Day 3 from AVR and doing GREAT!!

I had a mechanical AVR on Tuesday. It's now Friday evening and I'm nearly pain free, eating full meals and back to work (albeit from the hospital bed). I think the biggest difference lies in the fact that I had a right anterior thoracotomy instead of a mini-strernotomy. Dr. Clifton Lewis here...

    AVR Surgery Tomorrow Morning!

AVR set for tomorrow morning at St.,Vincent's here in Birmingham, AL by Dr. Clifton Lewis. I keep having to ask myself "why am I doing this?". Then I go through the thought process all over again and arrive at the same conclusion. I'm going mechanical and have the usual concerns: ticking? Will I...

    Mini Thoracotomy v. Mini Sternotomy

This is the biggest choice I will have to make. Each surgeon suggests the approach he prefers. Both are sufficiently experienced in the incision they recommend. One is at a teaching hospital. The other is at a not-for-profit. Any thoughts, input, and experience would be great. I'm a 38 year...
