Anniversary - a bit too much alchohol....

I am approaching my 1 year anniversary with my new Aeortic Mechanical valve. I have noticed slight spikes in my INR after drinking 3-4 beers a night a few nights in a row. I had a week or two where my INR was around 3.2-3.4. Never been in that range, as I try to stay around 2.5. I think...

    Sleeping issues

I usually don't wake up in the middle of the night. My problem is falling a sleep. I will be laying in bed, on my back, for hours, just feeling non-tired. But it will be 3 am, and I just can't sleep. I will wake up around 9, and just feel miserable. I am trying to sleep earlier, but it is...

New Post Op patient, I am young and new here too.

Yes, I am male, and my doctor did recommend a mechanical valve. I don't think the coumadin will interfere with my lifestyle, so it was a good choice for me.

How do I go about getting my own home testing INR device?

Hi everybody. I am new here. I am a 24 year old engineering student too. I am curious to know how I get my own home testing device. I am still under my parents insurance, so that is not a problem. I want to be able to test at home, so I don't have to continuously go out of my way to just...

New Post Op patient, I am young and new here too.

I wish there was an easier way for our bodies to accept mechanical valves. I will forever be on coumadin too. Hopefully another drug comes out in the future that doesn't carry the nasty side effects of coumadin, but needing anticoagulation for our bodies, that in it's own is a bad side effect...

New Post Op patient, I am young and new here too.

Hi Julian. I agree with you, every single week I am seeing improvements. Being very young, I think we are prone to quicker recoveries too, form what the doctors have told me. It's pretty rare to see people our age (20's), getting these types of surgeries. I know of one other person, and he...

After your surgery, what are some of the things that you found out that surprised you

Very interesting thread! I have read the first page, and I am surprised at how similar our experiences are. A few things I remember and want to share: -not remembering saying by to my parents and girlfriend right before they wheeled me into the surgery room. Even though I remember coming...

New Post Op patient, I am young and new here too.

Hi everybody. I recently stumbled across this site, sounds like a great place for all of us to get through what we have all together. Anyways, I was born with a bicuspid aortic valve, and had aortic stenosis. Now, at age 24, I had my surgery, on 8-5-11. I am about 4 weeks out now, and this...
