well, i had my first valversary celebrations at the belgian beer "occidental tavern" in vulcan lane last sunday; and no one from vr.com came along..
i am going to make this an annual event.

it was just one year ago that i stopped at the occidental on my way to the hospital for my mitral valve repair and had a great lunch and 3 jumbo sizes of dark brune beer. my logic was i should have a "last beer" in case repair was not possible. then i had to drive us to the hospital as my non drinking wife was too nervous about the operation!

the repair failed, i got an on-x and poor mrs westie cried all night about this because the surgeon and cardiologist had told us what a terrible thing artificial valves and warfarin were.

me, well i always doubted that repair was possible, i was never fussed about getting an artificial valve and one year later can say i live a totally normal life, normal diet, normal drinking, normal loving and working. warfarin is no drama. all my heart indicators are excellent.

actually i think i am better off with a mechanical valve than a tissue valve or even a repair. i guess this is herasy in some quarters, but tissue valves need repacing every 10 to 20 years and valve repairs DO FAIL, sometimes after quite short periods.

at least with my on-x valve i can probably look to the future in the knowledge that i have a lifelong solution. my wonderfull surgeon, he is the very best, told me my mechanical valve was second best (to repair, tissue valves being regarded as no option at all) but i reckon plan b was really plan a!

all the stories about warfarin dangers, bleeding etc, diet and drinking problems, dangers of physical activity, the dangers of pocket knives and razor blades blah blah are crap.

the most important thing is that i am still the same person, i am no better or worse. (granted my heart does not thump away when i am walking etc...)
the memory of the operation will always be with me, but at least the feeling of dread and impending death has departed!!

looking forward to my next beery valversary!

hi debbya

regret that no vr.commers turned up for my first anniversay "shout".
(kiwi/aussie slang for buying other people drinks)

i did look around the bar for anyone also looking around, but there no valvers evident.

anyway, we had a lovely first valversary meal and drinks ( 4 x jumbos ) and then wandered up queen street to watch that indian movie "who wants to be a millionaire" which i thought was so so. after that i looked at a bar but mrs westie told me to get in the car and she drove me home.............

Westie,
I was waiting for you to send my airplane ticket!
Sorry for the mix up . . . maybe next year?;)

Now if we had a vr reunion in New Zealand, I might have to work that one into my schedule! Congrats for making it through the first year. Here's to a million more.

Congratulations on your valversary, sounds like you celebrated in style.:)

Westie,
Great to hear from you that everything is going so well. The Occidental looks like a fun place to celebrate.
I'll raise a glass (or three) of beer to you tonight and hope you enjoy many more otherwise uneventful beery valversaries!

hi john

sometimes i forget how much the net has changed the world and that the casual mention of a pub (bar) can be followed up on the net in seconds...
heck, i have been going to the "occidental" for 37 years and i had never seen their website till now

the "ox" has never been a dive, but it was not always so fancy!

Just hope you to don't celebrate so much as to get real stupid and stand in front of speeding vehicles.:D That would be a waste of a perfectly good On-X valve.

Westie,

Everyone looked like they were having serious fun at the Ox even though it did look a little upscale. I checked flights and its about $1200 US to get to NZ. I'll play a lottery ticket tonight when I go get my beer and we'll see if I can make it there next time.

Otherwise if you are in Colorado we have about five small breweries in my town. Come visit and I'll take you on a brewery crawl. Make that a standing invite to any of you guys (gals). Offer good to only the first 10 valvers- I aint rich.
John
