When approximately is it safe to play golf without risking damaging the sternotomy?I assume it's 3 months.Anybody back to normal golf sooner?

I haven't played much in the last 10 years, but it seems that when you are released to drive, you should be okay to play golf. That is when they assume the sternotomy has healed and can withstand some pulling and twisting. For me it was 5 weeks.

Barrie,I just had a friend that had quadruply by-pass and his surgeon said three months.I assume it's the same with valve replacement.

My understanding is that the sternum takes 6 weeks to reach 85% of normal capacity and 12 weeks to reach 100%.

For Golf, I would think 12 weeks (i.e. 3 months) is a good and safe number...but to be sure, ASK your Surgeon for his recommendation.

That was the first question I had when I saw my cardiologist at 4 weeks post-op. Second question was "relations" with the wife. :) It was mid-April and I was getting the itch. He told me 12 weeks but that I could chip and put at 8 weeks. I played my first 18 at 9 weeks, swinging pretty easy. I dumped a few into bunkers which I pulled out of. My cardiologist told me that if I hit a shot fat, I would not be happy. After that 18 I was sore the next day but being the addict that I am I played again the following week. I will say that it was probably 13 or 14 weeks post-op until I was feeling comfortable over the ball again.

Please keep in mind that my procedure was minimally-invasive. Its still a chest crack but not the 8 inch variety.

My doc told me 3 months too but I couldn't stay away. I was at the range at 5 weeks - talk about fear of hitting the ground:eek:, and was on the course at 8 weeks. Didn't play very confidently but at least I was out there.
