Barb and I spent the last couple of days in Monument Valley. There is a new hotel there called "The View Hotel" that is IMHO astounding. I have a few pictures that back that statement up, but here is the first. I got part of the hotel in the upper left quadrant. I included, at the bottom left, a part of the railing on the deck from our room. In other words, this was the view from our room as we awoke in the morning.

For the moment, we got a "grand opening rate" of $80.0/day. Rates are scheduled to increase very soon.

Dennis,

Monument Valley is an amazing area and I am glad you stayed at a great place with a breathtaking and special view. Thank you for sharing your experience and pictures. The southwest is full of spiritual, breathtaking, and beautiful scenery.
Did you take the tour in the vans?

We were able to drive our own vehicle. This was nice, because we were able to head out long after any tours had shut down for the early evening. I was looking for some good photo opportunities, and they are much easier to find in the early morning or evening.

Glad you were able to explore independently! I looked at your blog..thanks for sharing your travel experiences and pictures of your beautiful family!

Wonderful photos as usual!!

Way back in 1994 we took a "western states trip", schlepping the kids around for a month in our little Saab and staying at National Parks and Best Westerns. We enjoyed Monument Valley. I remember that there was an odd little ticket taker booth as you entered the valley. No hotel at that time... just Reservation land. We loved it. We spent many an hour wandering through Trading Posts, also, though I'm not sure they were in this vicinity. They are amazing places full of beautifully crafted artifacts.

I do not remember who took this photo, but I imagine we stopped at a popular vantage point and another friendly traveller helped us out.

:D Thanks, Allan. I am now the shortest person in that 5-some!! Don't you love the old "air-Jordan" T-shirt? That son is at home, here and when I showed him the corner of Dennis' photo where they had built a hotel he was very disappointed! At 24, he's very concerned about preserving our natural places. My husband, on the other hand, said, "cool, maybe we should go back and stay there!!"

Nice photos. I too am a bit shocked at the location of the new hotel. When Dan and I were there the only hotel option within the reservation was the historic Gouldings Lodge where we stayed. We drove our own vehicle through the park one day and the next day we took a tour that went more off road than we were able to do with our car. I love Monument Valley. I have some photos around here that I'll have to dig out.

I wonder if they changed the no firewater regulation?

Jim
