I have been posting about my dad's problems over in Heart Talk & decided I had better start posting here.

Quick recap, he has been diagnosed with Mitral Valve regurgitation due to a busted chordae on the flaps of the valve. Also, two days ago, his heart cath revealed 70-80 percent blockage in all his coronary arteries, so he will also be getting at least a triple bypass along with his valve surgery.

His cardio referred him to Dr. Mary Mancini here in Shreveport. His first appt with her is Friday & we are thinking he will probably have surgery next week.

I have printed the questions that are stickied here on the site & will be taking them with us.

Sorry to hear about your dad's tripple by pass in addition to the mitral valve regurgitation. May all go well and please keep up posted about the results of next week's appointment.

Good luck and prayers,

Sorry he has to go through this, but I am glad the site has been helpful. Please let us know when he has a surgery date, so we can help him climb the mountain.

I have been asking around about this surgeon to some of my friends whose wifes are nurses, they all say Dr. Mancini is one of the best when it comes to heart surgery, transplants, valve surgery, etc. I have yet to here anything other than EXTREMELY positive comments on her! That definately helps & when I talked to dad earlier, I could tell that knowing that set his mind at ease also...at least a little!

Good luck to your dad. I am glad you found a surgeon. Who knows,I may be using her when the time comes. Is she at WK? Keep us all posted on your dad.

WK, LSU...from what I hear, she works all over!

She is the head of something-or-another at LSUHSC...

We met with the surgeon yesterday & everything went really well! The surgeon was great & she took the time to sit in there & answer all of our questions & thoroughly explain what the problems were & what needed to be done to fix them.

She says that she doubts if the valve can be repaired but will ultimately have to make that decision once she gets in there. Dad decided to go with a mechanical valve & deal with being on a blood thinner the rest of his life. The problem with artificial valves according to the surgeon is a risk for further surgeries down the road...she said she has seen it as early as a year or as far as 15 years.

She says she does between 90-120 valve replacement/repairs per year & has been doing them going on 20 years. We did meet several other post op patients in the waiting room & they all LOVED her & had only praise for her, everything from bedside manner to surgical capabilities.

Dad's surgery has been set for Dec. 11th...she wants his venous stasis ulcers on his legs to heal up more before the surgery.

I put him on the calendar for December 11th and we all will be here to cheer you both over the mountain. I am so glad that you both have so much faith in the surgeon- that's a "good thing"!

Very happy for the good news and the decision your dad has taken. It seems your dad will be in good hands on December 11-- Having faith in your surgeon prepares you mentally and emotionally better for the surgery.

You both shall be in my prayers:)
