I wanted to share a picture from our vacatoin to Florence Marina. I did some hiking in Providence Canyon State Park about 8 miles from the marina. I love the place. We also visited it about 3 years ago. I want to go back this winter to camp and hike again.

Karl,
That's beautiful. It looks like Canyonlands National Park in Utah but with trees.:D

I love seeing places that I'll never get to see without you folks posting pictures. Thank you!

Great picture, Karl, but I don't know exactly where this is. Can you help?

Isn't this also known as Gerogia's little grand canyon, located in south western Georgia?

If this is the same place, then I think I remember hearing that there were a bunch of abandoned old 1950's cars there someplace that they can't remove. I thought I also heard that this is not a natural formation, but happened because of erosion due to poor farming practices. I would have loved to have seen it.

Any pictures of the old cars?

Having grown up stomping around Providence Canyons (called THE Little Grand Canyons by locals) most of my early years, I have to admit to taking this place for granted. We?ve taken several visitors there and listen to them ooooh and ahhhh only to think to ourselves ?it is just a gulley?. As a matter of fact I?ve got several 60 foot gullies out behind our property.

Anyway, first a little history. Growing up, we were always told the canyon started from rain run-off from either the schoolhouse or church. Most experts blame the farmers. The name Providence Canyon supposedly comes from the Providence United Methodist Church that used to sit right next to the canyon. As the canyon crept closer and closer, they finally moved the church across the street. The road leading next to the canyon has been moved several times.

My grandfather used to cut timber out of the bottom of the canyon. Back then they first used mules then moved on up to mostly surplus Army vehicles. Our church used to have picnics there where us kids were let loose to climb and carve all over the canyon walls. I carved Peggy's and my initials in a tree down in the bottom back when we "were a courtin'". Tree is probably long gone by now. It became Providence Canyon State Park in 1971 and basically was put under strict controls on access.

I think all the old cars are long gone by now. Back in the late 50s I remember going with my mother to visit the Pattersons who owned most of the property and had a home right next to the canyon. They had about 20 or so ?junk? cars around the yard, from old Model Ts and up. That was before anyone saw the ?treasure? in the ?junk?. The reason it sticks in my memory so well is I got stung by 5 (my mother counted the stings as she was cleaning me up) very mad wasps when I opened the door of an old pick up and disturbed their nest.:eek::eek::mad:

I picked up a few more pictures from several web sites. I like this one because if you look real close (sorry, best I can do for size) you will see part of a fence over the ledge. That used to be an overlook area that had, for obvious reasons, been closed when this picture was taken.

Y'all come t'see us now yo' hear,

Danny :)

It figures that you grew up by Georgia's Little Grand Canyon, because I'm about 30 miles away from southern Illinois's Little Grand Canyon!
Here's a picture.

This is another, taken about 20 miles from here, that shows how the Mississippi River has cut out the surrounding area.

perrypiratesdad - Those old cars are still there. I walked around them three years and half years ago and walked around them again this last trip.

Mary - I grew up in Peoria. I had no idea Southern Illinois has a Little Grand Canyon.

By the way, during this last trip, I hiked the trails three times. Once with the about 12 family members in our group, once with my youngest son (8) and once by myself. The time I went by myself was when the rest of the family went swimming at the park pool. It was hot but I just had to hike one last time before we left for home :).

Also when we where there 3 and half years ago, it was two weeks before I found out my AV was shot. No wonder I would get out breath easily while hiking those trails. Not this time, I had no problems :):):). Amazing what a new valve can do for a body.

I did some searching and found some pictures of the old cars. It looks like they have been left there as it would cause more harm to remove them.

The Patterson home was just East of the canyons so that is probably the old homesite and some of the vehicles. If I have time this week-end I'll run over and see if I can find out. I'll take a camera. I don't know if I can even get close to where they are because the whole area is a State Park now and "unsupervised roaming" ain't allowed. Rangers will probably be busy during the week-end.

If I remember the story correctly, I think the vehicles belonged to a son that died and the family didn't want to get rid of them because of that. I'll see what I can find out.

Amazing what you can find in your own "backyard".

May God Bless,

Danny :)

Confess, Karl! ;)
If the truth be known, growing up in Peoria you probably had no idea there was any part of the state south of Springfield! LOL! :p:pMy husband was born in Peoria, and for the life of me, until this very moment I have never questioned what they were doing way up North!:confused:

Thanks for jogging my brain, and congratulations on being able to hike the trails without difficulty.

I doubt they carry Machine Guns so go for it! I'd love to see some pics. That stuff just fascinates me. It just always amazed me at old farm equipment left in a field. You always wonder what the story is behind that.

I remember hiking one time in the woods and came to a field, and there was a snowblower right in the middle of the field. It was old and rusted, so who knows how long it was there, but the better question is why was it there?

Here are a couple of additional pictures of the old cars in Providence Canyon. My youngest son (Greg) is in each picture.
