Isn't this also known as Gerogia's little grand canyon, located in south western Georgia?
If this is the same place, then I think I remember hearing that there were a bunch of abandoned old 1950's cars there someplace that they can't remove. I thought I also heard that this is not a natural formation, but happened because of erosion due to poor farming practices. I would have loved to have seen it.
Any pictures of the old cars?
Having grown up stomping around Providence Canyons (called THE Little Grand Canyons by locals) most of my early years, I have to admit to taking this place for granted. We?ve taken several visitors there and listen to them ooooh and ahhhh only to think to ourselves ?it is just a gulley?. As a matter of fact I?ve got several 60 foot gullies out behind our property.
Anyway, first a little history. Growing up, we were always told the canyon started from rain run-off from either the schoolhouse or church. Most experts blame the farmers. The name Providence Canyon supposedly comes from the Providence United Methodist Church that used to sit right next to the canyon. As the canyon crept closer and closer, they finally moved the church across the street. The road leading next to the canyon has been moved several times.
My grandfather used to cut timber out of the bottom of the canyon. Back then they first used mules then moved on up to mostly surplus Army vehicles. Our church used to have picnics there where us kids were let loose to climb and carve all over the canyon walls. I carved Peggy's and my initials in a tree down in the bottom back when we "were a courtin'". Tree is probably long gone by now. It became Providence Canyon State Park in 1971 and basically was put under strict controls on access.
I think all the old cars are long gone by now. Back in the late 50s I remember going with my mother to visit the Pattersons who owned most of the property and had a home right next to the canyon. They had about 20 or so ?junk? cars around the yard, from old Model Ts and up. That was before anyone saw the ?treasure? in the ?junk?. The reason it sticks in my memory so well is I got stung by 5 (my mother counted the stings as she was cleaning me up) very mad wasps when I opened the door of an old pick up and disturbed their nest.
I picked up a few more pictures from several web sites. I like this one because if you look real close (sorry, best I can do for size) you will see part of a fence over the ledge. That used to be an overlook area that had, for obvious reasons, been closed when this picture was taken.
Y'all come t'see us now yo' hear,
Danny
