My husband had BAV repair and aorta repair nine months ago. Three weeks ago he developed a terrible cough and took two rounds of antibiotics. Allergies were suspected but a chest x-ray revealed pneumonia in the lower left lung. His doctor feels like this could be left over from surgery. Does this sound plausible? He goes back next week for another chest x-ray and hopefully, this will be resolved. If not, we will go to the next step. Any others with this experience?

I'm sorry to read about your husband's issue. Your post reminded me of a diagnosis, or maybe it was a misdiagnosis, that Harleygirl528 had, though a shorter time following surgery than your husband. There are at least three threads where I did an advanced search of Harleygirl's posts, searching pneumonia, chronicling her experience--which you may find informative.

If you do the search for more information, click on advanced search and type in her member name and pneumonia and at the bottom left click on "posts" rather than "threads."

Hoping he is feeling much better soon.

Sorry to hear this and hope that the antibiotics will resolve it. Please keep us informed.

Hey Newmarket!

I was diagnosed with pneumonia three months after surgery. The doctors told me the exact same thing! My cardiologist...Dr. Cox...also said it was patients like me that made doctors like him realize that they don't know everything. So sometimes they are quite sure of their answers and sometimes it's an educated guess. However a higher power than us knows the answers! I will certainly include you all in my prayers! (I know that you have done the same for me for quite a while!) Please let me know via the GRAPEVINE (LOL!) how things are!

Hugs from Jefferson City!

Well, leave it to you and my husband to be the ones who give these doctors a challenge! Maybe it's in our Tennessee air........ha. The grapevine has done a great job keeping me up to date on your progress! We are soooo happy for you!! Thanks for the encouragement and the prayers. That's what gets us through times like these.

I suppose it may be possible, but 9 months out  We are all different and in this case, I guess we have to go with the professional guess.

I'm sorry to read that he's dealing with this.
I've had bouts of pneumonia throughout my life, and they are no fun.

Did your husband have the pneumonia shot before surgery? I know that was something my surgeon suggested before I had surgery. Can you still get it if you've had the shot? Some body else just started a thread on the same subject. But I don't think they had pneumonia just checking it out for getting the shot. I feel bad for your husband to have to go through this after OHS.I will keep him in my prayers tell him to hang in there!!

Thanks for all the replies! My husband did have a pneumonia shot prior to surgery. Good question, I hadn't even thought about that when all this happened.

Hi!!
Sending you and your husband wishes for his speedy recovery...no fun! I wonder if you could call Cleveland Clinic (the number to talk to a nurse) and give his patient number and ask them the question?? Anyway, thinking of you both!
