...passed away yesterday at the age of 88 due to a ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm. She had known of it for quite a while, at least two to three years. She chose not to have surgery on it at the time of diagnosis because she was in her mid-80's, it was quite large (baseball sized at diagnosis) and as a retired nurse, she felt that the risks outweighed the benefits. She chose instead to live her life to the fullest and accept death when the time came. In the meantime, she enjoyed her great grandchildren, spent time in the casinos of Ruidoso and Las Vegas, and continued her volunteer work.
She was a great lady. From her obituary, "She dearly loved her family and being around friends. She was a woman of integrity, faith and love. Her motto was "anything worth doing is worth doing well." Her mother taught her this and she honored it throughout her life." She has joined her husband of 65 years, who passed away in January of cancer.
We just returned from vacation after 5 days in California on Thursday morning at 1:15 a.m., slept until 9:00, got up, dressed, repacked and drove to Texas A & M for a visit that began at 12:15. After trekking all over the rather large campus, we got back in the car at 4:30, drove up to TCU in Fort Worth for a self-tour of the campus, got back in the car and arrived in Abilene at midnight. We got up around 8:00 and went to visit Abilene Christian University. Our visit started at 9:30 and ended at 2:30. We were tired and decided to go home without visiting our many relatives there. We arrived home at 9:30 last night. This morning I got the call that Aunt Edna had passed away. I felt guilty for not visiting her while I was there, but later learned that she had actually died while we were on our visit. I still feel guilty. Unfortunately, the funeral is Monday and I won't be able to go. After a week off work, I have a contract that couldn't be submitted prior to my vacation because of some system issues. It has to be submitted by the end of the month, which is Monday.
