Another evening was spent glued to the Local TV stations watching Weather Radars tracking Severe Thunderstorms with embedded Tornadoes come across Mississippi and North West Alabama (the #2 Tornado State behind Oklahoma).
All 3 of our Local TV Stations have their own WX Radars that rival (or if you believe the claims, surpass) those of the National Weather Service.
Fortunately for those of us in North Central Alabama, we witnessed a familiar pattern as the storms started to lose energy just before arriving in our area (at 1 a.m.)
That is NOT always the case, hence the reason resisdents of our area subject themselves to lengthy anxiety- producing forecasts sprinkled with Damage Reports from areas already hit by those storms.
One station recently showed a video from a security camera overlooking a parking lot in NW Alabama. Out of nowhere, winds picked up almost instantly, flipping a few cars in the parking lot as the lighter rear-ends of the vehicles lifted up and 2 cars rolled end for end past each other while another was pitched across the lot, then it was over. Most of the cars just sat undamaged.
I've seen videos of slabs where brick homes once stood, now swept from their foundations and totally demolished while the house next only lost a few shingles.
It's Weird Stuff that shakes the confidence of everyone who has witnessed the after-effects.
It's still a little 'breezy' this morning (Sunday May 11, Mother's Day) and my dog wanted back in right away.
The 'Change of Seasons' always brings the collission of cold air masses and hot air masses together with often devastating results, especially here in Alabama.
