Hi all, well i am making a post to let you all know that an AVR and single bypass is possible even if the patient has severe Emphysema. As you will recall i came here about ten days ago looking for answers re my dad's pending surgery. Well i am over the moon to say that it all went even better than i expected, he went in at 11.30 am and i saw him wheeled into ICU at 3.45 pm that day, and was allowed in to see him half an hr later. Even though he was still out to it he looked so much better than i expected. His vital signs were all great and he was very stable. The next big step was for him to come off the ventilator, and due to his breathing issues we all thought that it would be a few days before they could do this. But suprise suprise the next day at 11.00 am they removed the tube and he was breathing well. :D He spent a few days in ICU, as they wanted to make sure all was well and then he was moved to a general ward three days ago, and now he is expected to be released tomorrow morning. He is up and walking short distances, and cant be kept off the phone ringing all the family. ;) He rates his well being at the moment as an 8/10, that is great. So i wanted to post all this here and maybe one day someone may come looking for an answer and this will help them, like you all did for me. I know the recovery process is only just begining and there is a long way to go but all i can say is things have proceeded so much better than i had expected, or even dared to hope for. Thank you all for your words of support and assistance when i needed them and i hope everyone here that has had a recent op continues on recovering wonderfully. I shall update you all later about how it is all going once he has been home for a while.

Excellent news! Bear in mind he's going to have good and bad days for a while. Keep him focused on the good. It's a long slow recovery, but sounds like he'll do just that.

What wonderful news- and just the encouragement I needed!

I was so happy to hear about the outcome of your Dad's surgery -for both of you! It gave me a lot of hope for my upcoming AVR in May since I have some severe lung issues, too (sarcoid) and have been worried about the vent. Your Dad has proven to me that good outcomes are certainly possible- and even likely. I'm so happy for your family and can only imagine how relieved you all are. Blessings.............

Thanks for posting the wonderful news. Hoping he is home soon and on his way to a complete and uneventful recovery- sounds like he has a great start!

What wonderful news. Thank you so much for sharing it. Please keep us updated how he is doing. Hope all continues for him as smoothly as it has been so far.

Excellent news.
Keep an eye on him so he doesn't over do it. Eat, sleep, walk and breath is all he needs to do.

Thanks for posting.

Here's to you Dad for a continued uneventful recovery.
