Ok,
It's time for me to give up my favorite ingredient in the ENTIRE WORLD :(
Butter has got to go.

So, my problem is, I HATE margarine and anything fake tasting.
Before I spin my wheels and waste time trying them all out and doing the healthy research, has anyone already been through this?

Who's got suggestions? (Country Crock doesn't count!)

Thanks!
-Brian

I like the taste of Smart Balance and I Can't Believe It's Not Butter. They have more flavor than many margarine type spreads. Other than that kind of thing, I haven't heard of any other butter substitute.

What are you using the fat for?

Frying? Substitute sunflower oil.

Bread spread? Use condiments - fruit butter and compotes, jam, nut butters, salsa, different types of relish, ketchup, mustard or as the ancient Romans and Greeks - dip pieces of hearty bread into olive oil or an olive tampinade.

Baking? If the recipe calls for butter, use butter. Odds are the end product won't be good for you anyway.

As with anything else, used in moderation anything can be tolerated, even fats.

butter

butter

They gave me Promise in the hospital and my doctor suggested some of the new heart healthy spreads with something from plants, I think sterols? that are good. I've tried a few and they're all pretty good.

Butter, Parkay

Butter, Parkay

I tried Smart Balance, 67% whipped vegetable oil, it's ok, does not spread as easily as margarine or butter. I bought some Parkay, new fresh & creamy taste, 0g Trans Fat, 0g Choletersol, it says it's 58% whipped vegetable oil spread, it spreads easily. Gotta spread easily right out of the fridge.

It may just be me but it tastes like regular Parkay margarine. :)

I have tried them all and have not settled on any of them yet. I love butter, too and the good press is nice to hear s0 I use it when the mood strikes me.

Whatever you decide on, your taste buds will adjust and you will finally like it. Just don't go changing around or you'll never settle on anything. I had trouble with sweet 'n lo in the beginning but love it and don't like sugar anymore.

We use the Olive Oil spread and think its really good. It spreads easily. I use the I Can't Believe its not butter spray for popcorn, etc. For cooking I use light Olive Oil cooking oil. I use it anywhere vegetable oil is called for.

We really love butter here, and Tom just slathers it on, so we need to cut back on that. Tom's arteries are clear, however, I don't know what mine look like and CAD runs in my father's family.

But isn't margarine just one ingredient shy of being plastic? I read that some time ago and for all I know lots of food are just one ingredient shy of being plastic also.

to check the info on margarine, go to Snopes Urban Legends and search margarine. My dog won't eat it! I've eaten it all my life. My children never would eat butter until they grew up.

I love butter. I will not use margarine. I am a pretty awesome cook and used to fry everything with butter. Now I use olive oil for everything but eggs which still get a pat (though much smaller pat) of butter.

I recently heard that if you added just one more ingredient to margarine you would have plastic!! plastic!!! Not for me.

Think of the things you use butter on and either replace them with the things Pamela mentioned, or just don't eat them anymore. Like baked potatoes. Or any potatoes. I rarely have them. We've stopped having starchy carbs with dinner. None. Just meat/fish and green or other veggie or salad. No more pasta (tthat 's good with olive oil anyway). I don't have toast in the morning anymore, I've replaced it with cold cereal and soy milk (takes awhile, but you can get used to it).

THink of the overall picture. Rather than completely deprive yourself, just maybe make a few changes and make it work better for you.

Good luck!

Smart balance has been the best flavor and recipe replacement for me. Before my stroke I experimented with a lot of butter substitutes both for me and for my diabetic mother.
Olive oil also makes a good replacement for butter in some recipes .

I use Becel. I don't know if it available in the states. When i cook I use olive oil. I find the becel has the most flavor and doesn't turn to water. i am
a butter lover myself. Becel was recommened by my cardio. I love baked
salmon with butter dill sauce but I now just use Becel.

Talked to the dietitian on Friday.
In her opinion, butter is best but in small quantities.
She suggested that I increase my use of Olive Oil for cooking wherever possible.
Turns out that most of the alternatives could be worse in the long run.
I just need to cut down on the quantities (of everything really).

If baking you can use applesauce as a substitute.

I agree with the olive oil

stay away from the sprays, they are mostly chemical.

butter is better than margarine which is hydrogenated and if you left it out in your garage even the bugs wouldn't go near it (hmmmmm.....)

anything is ok within moderation. if you are on strict orders not to have it then opt for the olive oil or a butter made with flaxseed oil.
