I really appreciate everyone taking the time to reply. This is such a wonderful support group and I'm glad that my wife found it! I guess I'll just have to take my chances riding in the front seat on the way home. We live about 12 hours from here and we brought our two little girls with us, so we had to load up the Tahoe to get here (as some of you can relate when traveling for 1+ weeks with a two year old and a 6 week old. We had to take out the 3rd row seats for the luggage room and we have bucket seats for the second row, so I'm confined to the front seat. I'll chat with the nurse practitioner and/or surgeon before I leave to see what recommendations that they have. May see if I can turn off the airbag for the trip home if they think it'll be better. I'll just pray for a safe, uneventful trip home. :)

Superbob - I'm actually serious when I say that they let me drink a Mountain Dew within a couple of hours of being extubated. As you can relate, I was still VERY droggy from the anesthetic and pain pills, but still managed to 'negotiate' with my nurse. I absolutely LOVE Mountain Dew and I guess that I had it on my mind. My wife said that it was actually pretty funny how I was trying to charm the nurse into letting me have it. And not only did I drink a Mountain Dew, but I drank a 20 oz Mountain Dew threw a straw...in about 20 minutes. Best drink that I've ever had...by far! I look back and laugh now. I guess they probably shouldn't have given it to me, but like I said, it was worth every bit of it.

I wish everyone a great couple of days and I'll post again once I get home.

Anyone sleep in a recliner once they got home? Or a bed? I'm unsure as to which is best, but I know the recliner will be easier (maybe not as comfortable). I appreciate any feedback.

Take care and God Bless!
Doug

Doug, I'm surprised you didn't barf up your 20 oz. Mountain Dew. You are really lucky!

As for the bed / recliner thing, a lot of people here could not sleep in their bed right away. Luckily I could. So, I guess it depends on you and whether you are able to sleep in your bed.

Well Doug, with a 2 year old and a 6 week old, there is no doubt you will be making frequent stops and walking around!:D Check with the doctor about disarming the airbag and we wish you safe travels. Looking forward to hearing that you are home sweet home and ensconced in your bed or your recliner.

Good Morning Doug and I wish you the best.
Disarming airbags may not be possible - the cost factor - big $$$$$$$$
And drinking Mountain Dew and not puking..........amazing. I puked up my ice chips in ICU. After 24 hour my better half brought up a Pepsi - and I know what you mean about how something could taste SO good. I got an evil eye from my nurses, but what were they going to do......kick me out:D
Take care and drive safe

oh Yea, when I got home I went straight to my bed. I was never told about recliners. I was showed how to get myself in and out of bed in the hospital. I would lower the hospital bed to get stronger for my bed at home. Yes it was tough and somewhat painful getting in and out of a flat bed - but it helped me to strengthen those upper chest and back mussels. A lot of members have mentioned that they used a few pillows to boost themselves up in bed. Not me......didn't even think of that. I was flat like a pancake.
And the real kicker to this story is that I have 4 recliners (2 in couch-2 in love seat) and they were never used......duh.

I guess you'll have to experiment with each.

I slept in my bed from my first night home but I did use pillows. I had a wedge pillow and a couple of regular pillows the first night. The next night I took out one of the pillows so slept with the wedge pillow and one pillow. Now sleep on two regular pillows. I'm almost four weeks out. I got in and out of bed the way they showed me at the hospital. I slept on my back for a couple of nights (I'm not a back sleeper) then slept some on my right side and last night slept a few minutes on my left side. Can't wait to get back to stomach sleeping.
Good luck on your trip home. Stay safe

Congratulations Doug. Best of luck with the long ride home. I'm assuming you're on I-30, I-40 long haul. I used to live in Little Rock and I know most of that drive quite well. Can't beat the fried catfish that's so easy to find in Little Rock but I guess this isn't the trip to be checking out the local fried food. Long stretches of wide open interstate but at least you've got a couple of big cities in between Plano and home. Get well soon!

Doug,

I have been told to avoid any products with caffeine. Isn't Mountain Dew loaded with the stuff? Maybe a more knowledgable VR member will way in.

Anyway keep up the great recovery.:)

Congratulations on a successful surgery. I'm astonished you didn't barf up the Mt. Dew. I barfed every ice chip, but kept asking for more. I slept in my bed as soon as I got home, but I used 3 pillows to form a wedge. I used that for at least a month. I hope your ride hope is safe and your recovery is easy and uneventful.
