I have been having stomach issues off and on since surgery. About 3 weeks ago my internist scheduled a ultra-sound of my abdominal area, which I kept putting off since I am tired of the dr! But I finally went today. So I received a call this afternoon from my dr. that I have cysts on my ovaries (non-issue, very small) but also I have pools of blood in my liver. There is a name for it which I can't remember. Wasn't able to write it down since I was out with my kids when she called - hemogen-something. I asked if it could be caused by the coumadin and she said she's not completely sure so I have to have an MRI next week to get a better look. It's funny b/c after the test today I told people, I am done! No more tests and dr. visits this year (besides INR checks of course). Of course things could be worse and she said it isn't anything I need to worry about (my brother the dr. said this too) but I'm just wondering if it's from the meds and what they do about it. My INR is low anyways. Has anyone else had this happen?

Wish you had the exact name. Don't think I've ever heard of such a thing in the 6 years I've been here.

It's called hemangioma...guess I'll go google it. Thanks for posting.

I just googled it, Haley. Are you sure that's what it's called? It must be rare if it's showing up in your liver.

Hailey, so sorry that you are dealing with this.

It's rare for Coumadin to cause bleeding without something already being wrong. Spontaneous bleeding is very rare for those who's INR is within range. However, Coumadin can cause things to bleed sooner in areas where something is already going on, and draw attention to the problem more quickly, such as stomach ulcers, uterine issues, polyps in the intestine, etc.

Here's what I found for "hemangioma"

A hemangioma is an abnormal build up of blood vessels in the skin or internal organs.[1] It is also described as a congenital benign skin lesion consisting of dense, usually elevated masses of dilated blood vessels".[2] In most cases, hemangiomas will disappear over time. They are formed either during gestation or appear during the first few weeks of life and may present as a birthmark. Hemangiomas occur in approximately ten percent of Caucasians, and are less prevalent in other races. Females are three to five times more likely to have hemangiomas than males. Hemangiomas can be vivid superficial lesions, known as capillary hemangiomas (often referred to as "Strawberry Marks"), or they can be deep bluish swelling, known as cavernous hemangiomas. Sometimes they can be both superficial and deep. Approximately eighty percent are located on the face and neck, with the next most prevalent location being the liver. Although hemangiomas are benign, some serious complications can occur.

Best wishes!

My cousin has the same thing. She was panicked several years ago about this, because the initial tests showed they might be cancerous. Further tests found they were hemangiomas. She's had no problems with them.

I also have hemangiomas. An OB/GYN detected them 30 years ago and biopsied them to rule out melanoma. There is no way to remove them permanently, and they're fairly small. In the last 30 years, one has "popped" about 3 times.

I doubt they'll really be a long-term problem for you.

Thanks for all of that information! I was reading up, too. Looks like they aren't a problem as long as they're benign, I'm just worried about one bursting since I'm on warafin.. guess I'll find out more from my dr. after the MRI. I'm thinking they were already there and the ultrasound just found them as the info I read said this is how they're detected in most cases. Thanks again, everyone.

I hope you get the answers that will put your mind at ease. And I hope you get them quickly. I hate waiting for answers to my medical questions.

I read the same thing as Karlynn, but totally missed the last part of the description that said after the head and neck, the most prevelant place is the liver.
I was diagnosed with one in my brain after an MRI. That was why I thought you had misheard what the doctor said . . . I didn't realize they could be found in so many body organs. I was told not to worry about mine, and I haven't.
Anyway, I will be interested in reading what the doctor tells you after your MRI.
Best wishes,
Mary

I hate waiting for answers to medical issues, too. Guess that's why I'm always googling!
Mary, that puts my mind at ease that you were told not to worry about yours and haven't had any issues. My MRI is on Tues. so I'll be sure to post when I find something out.
Thanks again.

Halley:

After the MRI, find out what size the hemangioma/hemangiomas is/are. Mine are very small, about the size of a small mole or freckle. And, yes, one has "popped" since I went on warfarin, with very little bleeding, about the same as before.
I know you're concerned right now, since you haven't had your MRI. But ... I feel confident you'll be just fine and that your doctor will reassure you, too.
My cousin, who has the hepatic hemangiomas, has had a repeat MRI and hers are unchanged.

Update - good news!

Update - good news!

got my MRI results today - turns out my hemangiomas are benign and nothing to worry about. I didn't actually speak with the dr. but I am going to see her on Friday, and I will find out what size they are or if any follow-up is needed.
