Curtsmum

Yesterday Curtis fell over flat on his face, he felt dizzy and didn't know what had happened, he was brought home in a daze. He was breathing heavy and had no colour in his face or lips. After a couple of minutes his colour came back and he seemed to be ok, he was ok for the rest of the night and seems to be ok today, apart from the cuts and is coughing a bit. Does this sound like it could be heart related or am i just being a over worrying mum. This as never happened to him before and he as now been put on the surgical waiting list, although i dont think they plan on doing his surgery before a years time.

Yes,
I would be concerned that it was heart-related, and I would contact the doctor.

Thanks for the quick replys, wasn't sure what to do as he was fine afterwards but i have just found out he had a small race bfore it happened, so i will ring his consultant, thanks again

My Non-Professional GUESS is that it could be Heart Rate related, i.e. his heart rate may have fallen to a dangerously low rate and he fainted.

My Non-Professional Recommendation is that he should have an EKG and maybe even put on a Holter Monitor or Event Monitor to check his heart rate over a period of time to look for Low HR events.

The treatment for Low Heart rate is to implant an automatic defibrilator (or pacemaker if he is having irregular heartbeats). If he is having rapid or irregular heartbeats (Atrial Fibrilation, PAC's, PVC's, etc., there is medication for those conditions).

Bottom Line: CHECK IT OUT !

Paula, please let us know what the doctor tells you. I'm glad you are calling.

Syncope refers to a temporary loss of consciousness usually related to temporary insufficient blood flow to the brain ? a fainting spell. It may be caused by many different factors including emotional stress, pooling of blood in the legs due to sudden changes in body position, or heavy sweating. Syncope may occur during violent coughing spells (especially in men) because of rapid changes in blood pressure. It also may result from a number of heart and lung disorders.
What is neurally mediated syncope?
Neurally mediated syncope (NMS) is a benign form of fainting that's common in children and teenagers. NMS occurs because blood pressure drops, reducing circulation to the brain and causing loss of consciousness. If the syncope is prolonged, it can trigger a seizure. Placing the child in a reclining position will restore blood flow and consciousness and end the seizure.

Children who have NMS are not abnormal, but any child who loses consciousness suddenly during exercise or stress or "for no good reason" should be taken to a physician for testing.

Paula,

I'm a bit concerned about the events leading to his "being brought home". Did he pass out at school? If so, was he checked by a school nurse? If not, why not? !

Sending a child with known heart condition(s) home after 'passing out' seems awfully DANGEROUS and Laxidasical (sp?) to my mind. I would have a word with the responsible parties about what to do in the event this happens again.

Joe had several episodes when he just "fell over" without any warning. It turned out to be a very slow heart rate. He had a pacemaker implanted and that took care of it.

It is dangerous not only from a heart related standpoint, but because there is no warning and it could happen anywhere, on the stairs, crossing the street. etc. Joe dislocated his jaw and also possibly tore some stitching loose from his newly operated on heart ( causing his third heart surgery) when he just dropped like a rock onto his face and chest, just missing the sharp corner of the dining room table. I watched it happen, was too far away to get to him in time. Another time, he almost went through a large plate glass window. Another time, he gored his side with something in the yard when he fell there.

Get help for him, and do not let the docs slough it off.

It is differrent when a heart patient has fainting episodes, usually not just "one of those things".

Glad you asked. And like Nancy said, don't let the doctors slough it off. This may not be the first or only time that Curt has passed out.

My dad passed out a lot with his heart and took some horrendous falls. It got better when he received a pacer.

Take care and please post again.

Wishing you well! I have 3 children, now older, and I would've called someone immediately!! I am a worry wart, and I know things are different in the UK, but PLEASE insist that he be looked over. I don't like the sounds of any of that. Doctors presuming that a year is a safe wait could be wrong. Or things could've changed due to a growth spurt, or other factors.

Keep us posted.

Thanks everyone, i took him to see the doctor and he said he was starting with a virus causing him to go dizzy, the after affects were caused by him winding himself. He as got antibiotics and is feeling fine in himself.

Curtis wasn't at school at the time he was playing on the front with friends, a neighbour brought him home.

Thanks again for all the replys.

Thanks for letting us know. We heart people naturally think of a problem with our hearts in the event of something like what happened to Curt. Glad to know it's not and pray he will be on the mend. Blessins...........

Sorry, I'm confused. Antibiotics are not given for a virus. If he winded himself after nominal exertion....isn't that cause for concern (has the windedness potential increased?)

Another thought. Did he happen to hit his head? Were the kids playing and he got pushed to hit his head by some chance? Kids don't always confess to deeds done at that age...not realizing any benefit to telling the truth if they've been too rough. I just wonder if your son had a mild concussion which would have certainly caused him to be colorless and dizzy also. Please check his head for lumps or swellings and ask him to tell you exactly what was going on. OF course, if he hit his head, and it was hard enough, he may not remember. All 3 of my children had concussions at least once. Their responses varied from nothing much, to very swooning and gray complection, to completely not knowing where they were. The consequence of all of them was nominal....just don't let them in a situation where they could hit their head again as repeated concussions are quite dangerous......a little one here and there doesn't usually amount to much.

Hi Paula, I hope Curt is feeling better and it is as simple as the doc said !!!!

I KNOW you will be keeping a good ''eye'' on him just in case !!

Forgive my cynical nature; I just don't trust docs the way that I used to. Saying it is a virus sounds like a big brush off to me. I am sure that he is fine now, but I am worried that his heart could be getting worse and that this was a symptom of that. When is his next visit to the cardio scheduled? If it is far off, I would call the cardio and discuss it with him.

Yes, please do! Just to be extra cautious. Let us know!

Curtis often gets antibiotics when he gets a cold virus as it often affects his chest too.
He didn't bang his head at all but did bash his chest. I have been keeping a very close eye on him and he doesn't seem to be getting out of breath or anything, i'd say he was back to his normal self. He is back for a heart scan on the 16th of november but i am still keeping a very close eye on him, thanks

Thanks for clearing that up! It's the mother in us!!!! And now you have a few extra mothers helping you worry!!

That means we'll want updates....so please know how much we care and will look forward to all your news about your precious son.

Best wishes!!

Marguerite
