What is the soonest a person can fly after heart surgery. I live in southwest Missouri and having surgery in Roch. Minnesota. I would rather fly back than drive 12 hours. Does anyone know anything about it? thanks Seth

My husband is most likely having his surgery at Cleveland Clinic. He was told he can fly home 24 to 48 hours after surgery. That seems a little soon to me but that's what they said.

Are they planning he'll be out of the hospital 24-48 hours after surgery? That's quite unusual.

Seth,
My sister (KatieD) may post shortly but she had her Mitral Valve Repair surgery on a Tuesday in Dallas, TX, and flew back to Denver, CO, on the following Sunday.

No, but that's the time frame that you should be able to fly after surgery. I sure as heck wouldn't have been able too and expect the story would be the same as many here. I would plan on at least 5 days on the ground first.

Seth,

I flew from Denver to Dallas for my surgery in June 2007. I was released on day 6 after surgery and flew back that day. I relied on the wheelchairs at the airport and actually found them quite useful for speeding through security.

I had minimally invasive surgery so didn't have the issues with the sternum tenderness, but I posted here before my surgery and found others who traveled home immediately after surgery without any problems. Try searching on airplane flights.

Ditto. I flew from Birmingham, AL to my home in Jacksonville, FL five days after my surgery. TSA employees were very caredul with me.:D It felt strange to be one of those people were the first to board because I needed to be wheeled chaired to the plane and sloooooowly walkto my seat.

I didn't explain myself very well. My husband was told to expect to be able to fly home 24 to 48 hours after being released from the hospital.

Thanks. Considering all the posts here, it seems many are able to get through the airport, onto planes and fly home. I'm not sure I would have been able to. I seriously doubt I could have flown before about 10 days after being released from the hospital.

Shelley: Good luck for your DH and you. I sincerely hope all goes smoothly for him and he will be able to fly soon after his discharge from the hospital.

Seth: Wish you the same. That all goes very smoothly and you can fly home the time span you want.
