Hi Bonnie,

My wife has taught 8th grade for 23 years. That probably explains why she has been able to put up with me for 24.:D :D My hat is off to educators at all levels. I would not last 1 week in the classroom.

Tom

I taught in a third grade classroom, then moved to fifth.
I loved the kids and the people I worked with, but the extra duties and administrators were truly a drag.
And Bonnie, you might be surprised at how many teachers suffer nightmares the last few weeks before school starts. Many times they're just as anxious as the kids.

I are not a teacher, but niece teaches high school math; daughter is school bookkeeper in Newnan plus principal's sec'y and right hand. that count?

Niece is working on her master's degree. She loves teaching. She put herself through college to get where she is. We are proud of her. As we are of all teachers. I don't know how y'all do it. Thank you.

Until 2005, I taught grade 6-12 music...chorus and voice and general music. I'm currently teaching privately. My wife teaches secondary English and has had about 2 weeks of the nightmares that were previously mentioned :p !!!! School starts next week and her school is undergoing a major construction project, but it'll be ok. When it's over!!! :D

This will be my 7th year teaching. I taught 1st grade for 4 years, 6th grade Math for 1 year, and this will be my second year teaching 5th grade. Last year I taught Math only, this year I'll be teaching Math and Science. Since the law changed in Texas, school doesn't start here until August 27th. I have to go back on the 20th and I dread the teacher inservices before school starts. Talk about a numb butt! I dread the first few days getting routines started. So, I'm always ready for the 2nd week of school. Next time I have surgery, I'm going to plan it better to be out the first week of school and let the sub extablish routines!!!

I've been a special ed teacher for close to 20 years now! :D I teach reading, spelling, grammar to 7th graders who struggle for one reason or another...learning disabled, attention defecit, mildly mentally impaired, behavior disordered, mildly autistic, etc. Most of my kids tend to be LD or ADD/ADHD, but I always have a sprinkling of others as well. I love it! Teaching is my niche! Seventh grade is where I belong! :D :D :D
I've just finished up some grad work as well as an awesome, awesome, awesome reading workshop and I can hardly wait to get going again! Actually I am in my classroom right now working on lesson plans! Here's to a fantastic year for students and teachers alike!!!! :D :D

P.S. I have to admit 9 times out of 10 I have a nightmare the night before school starts. The nightmare is always the same....I am having to spank a child and my arm is rubberish. Don't ask me why I have that nightmare because I've only spanked one child in my life and that was on the request of his parent.

I have been teaching for almost 30 years. I have taught every elementary grade( 1-6) at one time or another. For the last several years, I have taught first grade.
I had an inservice this past Monday and spent the last 3 days working in my classroom. Our first official day back is tomorrow.
Monday's inservice was to teach us how to use our new toy. :) Each one of us got a new laptop computer. My head is still spinning from this inservice. I don't know when I am going to have time to learn how to use this thing! I have never used anything but Windows. This is a Mac... It is hard to teach this old dog new tricks.lol

I am a preschool teacher-two's and three year olds. My kids, who are first and fourth grade go back next week. My first day is the day after Labor Day:) It is so fun to watch the little ones in my class grow throughout the year-they start off as toddlers and turn into preschoolers!:) Deb

Not sure if this really counts, but I used to teach Driver Education for 10 years. Yes there were a few times I would scream "oh my God, we're all gonna die". This used to be my favorite saying after the student made a foolish move, not a serious/dangerous move, I would have to grab the wheel before anything would happen. It was a good way to break the ice with new and nervous drivers. Nightmares..........I still have them LOL

Freddie,
Remembering my own experiences taking driver's ed and just recently teaching my daughter to drive, yes that definitely counts!

The big thing when I was taking driver's ed was to drive over the bridge to the beach because they knew that as soon as we got our licenses, that is where we would be going. This bridge was built tall so that ships could go under it (the shape of the St. Louis Arch). It was quite scary to be in the car when a student driver was driving over that bridge. It was also quite scary to be the student driver driving over that bridge! Right after that, we drove on the levee, a little two-lane road that went along the top of the levee for several miles, no shoulders, just quickly descending grass and sand on either side of the road. For us flat landers, it was terrifying!

Lisa,
That's when I would grab the dash board and scream
"Oh My God....We're all gonna die" Then laugh, it is the best stress release in a situation like that.

Educators

Educators

This year marks my 28th as a secondary educator. I spent 23 years in middle level education. 14 of those 23 years involved a combination of teaching and assistant principal duties.

I've been a principal for the last 5 years. One year in a middle school and four in at my present high school. My wife and I met 22 years ago when she became an administrative assistant in the middle school in which I was working. We've been working together in schools ever since.

Here in Australia we have preschool teachers (3 & 4 year olds), primary teachers (5-12year olds) and secondary teachers (13-18 year olds). I was a primary teacher for 7 years before I stopped to have my 3 little ones. I loved teaching...I miss it sometimes but I love being a mum now too. I now do a bit of part time teaching, but I'm unsure whether I'll go back full time after my 3 are all at school. Teaching requires a lot of work after hours (wouldn't it be good if we were paid overtime!) and I'm not sure I could combine both motherhood and teaching and do both of them justice. My youngest (still a baby) doesn't start school until 2012 so I've got some time to think about it!

I've been a teacher for 7 years and have taught our reception year (aged 4-5), year 1 (aged 5-6) and year 2 (aged 6-7). Currently teaching year 2 and LOVE my job!

This is a great topic, with a lot of things to write about. My wife has taught for 39 years. She still gets down on the floor with her second graders, and bounces up to move on to the part of the day. She was born with a great motor-nobody knows how she maintains her level of energy. She says it comes from being around the kids.

I am the relatively new president of the school board. Our district has two Indian Pueblos (which are considered sovereign nations for many legal purposes). The two Pueblos have their own languages. For one of the Pueblos the language is to be kept secret from non-tribal members, and is not a written language. Teachers familiar with various federal requirements about offering testing and others maters in a child's native language can imagine how interesting that gets. Also, there is an extra mountain of federal complications (and opportunities) when your district has a large Native-American population.

Finally, having a teacher who is an officer in the teacher's union spending her evenings with her husband who is school board president can also lead to some interesting situations. That's the way it goes in our small, rural communities. So far, we love every day.

I taught 7th and 8th grade for 11 years (1973-1984).

Being a teacher was the only thing I ever wanted to do when I was growing up so I was devastated when I lost my job due to falling enrollments.:( When I began teaching I had 5 different sections a day with a total of 150 - 160 students, my final few years I only had a total of 100-120 students. As a result that September following my lay-off the town closed 2 of the 4 middle schools. Ironically the past few years all the towns around here are now struggling with increasing enrollments due to the latest baby boom.

I was fortunate to find an advisor position in a college. I've been here for 22 years and even though I am not teaching; I still get to work with students even if they are a little older. And the best part is I get to eat lunch and go the "ladies room" whenever I want!!!:D

I definitely tip my hat to current teachers - it is definitely not an easy job!

I just started my 15th year of teaching last Friday. I'm actually off today because the community in which I teach in Northern KY had a major water line break yesterday. Not used to having a "snow" day this early. :D

Anyway, I spent a year in an alternative school in Indianapolis, five years teaching eighth grade language arts in Illinois, a year in a Catholic school in Evansville when my husband transferred jobs, and now I'm starting my eighth year in a very large Northern KY high school teaching sophomore and senior English and Teen Leadership. I actually live in Indiana and cross the Ohio River every day to get to school. I enjoyed my summer but didn't mind too much going back. I knew I had a nice schedule this year, and as it turns out, I have several kids that I've had before in other classes.

My youngest son just started his senior year at his school yesterday, and my oldest is going back to Purdue next week.

Teaching is very difficult, that's for sure, but I still enjoy it. Maybe if I could do it over again, I may reconsider teaching English because of all the essays.

I'm not a teacher but I work at a middle school (bless me :D ) And, this is all I have to say:
