If you are at all interested in model railroading (HO scale, etc.) or railroad museums in general, check out the following links....

Valley Model Railroad Club, S Elgin IL:
http://www.trainweb.org/vmrr/index.htm

...My parents used to take my sister and I here at least once a year. Each time, we'd see a slightly different layout. It was always a fun time and one that we eagerly anticipated. The drive to get there seemed to take FOREVER. Now, we know just how CLOSE it really is!

Fox River Trolley Museum, S Elgin IL:
http://www.foxtrolley.org/

...I've been here a couple times ... not much lately ... but, as with the VMR noted above, is very very close.

Illinois Railway Museum, Union IL:
http://www.irm.org/

...I've driven by this place a few times, but have not had the chance to actually stop and take a look. One day, I will. I

And, of course, my own layout:

So ... any railroad museums or clubs near you?

Years and years ago I had a boyfriend who was into the RR thing; we used to go to a model RR show in Montreal. The layouts, landscaping, and attention to detail was amazing.

Hubby and I have alot of model cars.....including a couple of racing sets. When we met I was a Camaro freak, and he was an AMC nut, (AMX, Javelin, Rambler, etc.)

In Montreal there is also a collectibles show and sale every year. There's always tons of model cars!!! Lots of wheeling and dealing...bring cash:)

I was previously employed at the Chicago & Northwestern Railway, and I swear have the employees were somehow involved at the Illinois Railway Museum. It has a huge collection of rolling stock, including many steam engines. If you are into trains this is one great place to visit.

Hey Bina,

Have any pics of your collections?

Not sure if you've seen mine or not, but here is a sample pic:

And, Tom ... have you been out to that museum before? One of these days I will actually take the time to stop and look around ... instead of just driving right on by it ;).

I had (and probably still have) too many hobbies, and the layout went some years ago: I still have some scratchbuilt rolling stock and a repressed interest.
The Detroit Model Railroad Club layout in Holly is fabulous, O scale, built sturdy enough to walk all over it. It is built in an old movie theater, with quite a vertical separation between the various layers, and an absolutely huge curved turnout built in place. I think all the track is handlaid. http://www.dmrrc.org/

Jim,

Wow ... that looks cool! I may have to stop there one of these times I'm in MI :).

Have any pics of your old layout?

And...I know the feeling of having too many hobbies .. he heh.

Thank you :).

And, yes, if you can ... get pics! Would love to see 'em.

BTW, I spotted this article today in the local newspaper (the same one that did the article on my April radio shows) about the Trolley museum:

hmmm, when life was slower and trolleys were the norm.....

North of Ottawa, departing from Hull, Quebec, is the Wakefield Steam train.
Now that is a fantastic ride!! A real steamer. We went a few years back.
The trip is along mountains and rivers, north to Wakefield; there the engine is unhooked and driven onto a turntable which turns it around for the return trip.
Great restaurants and shops to pass a couple of hours while waiting.

There is another steamer attraction in south eastern Ontario. This one is miniatures on laid out track. They burn coal, it is the real thing! The engineer (mostly retired conductors) sits on the engine and visitors can sit on the cars for a short ride.

Maybe I can dig up some pics......

Ah, Bina, YES! Dig out some of those pics.... Sounds great :).
