Does anyone here do HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training)? It supposed to be a great cardio work-out. Basically you jog for 30 seconds, sprint for 30 seconds, etc... I amthinknig about giving that a try.

I don't do it, but I would check with your cardiologist before starting. Since you just had surgery in December, it might be too much, too soon. I was told to keep within my target heart rate. Good luck!

I bet nobody does since nobody has mentioned it that I know of and we have some athletes here. If anyone does, they'd surely have talked about it. It sounds strenuous, but you look like you could do it. As KB said, you might want to check this one out, however. Or wait and see if anyone else comes in with comments.

HiiT

HiiT

It is absolutely legit. I am 8 weeks out from mv repair and started it two- weeks ago. Depends on what your goal is. I was very athletic before lifting, running, etc, but my runs were longer 4-6 miles range a few times a week. During my recovery phase, I obviously couldn't run that distance so I decided to practice HiiT. Then I began reading a few articles on how long, slow cardio (which I was the queen of) was literally making everyone fat (saw it on Good Morning America a few weeks ago) and burning off everyone's lean muscle. So I decided to do the walk/run thing at 30-60 second intervals for a half hour, then for the next 15 minutes of my workout, I added lots of football type agility drills (grapevines, mountain climbers, rope jumping) and wind sprints which wipe you out!

Its only been a few weeks, and truth be told, i don't need to lose any weight, but it is changing my shape big time and I'm preserving my muscle from lifting. In the 10+ yrs I've been working out like a fiend and have not gotten these results probably because of the 5+ days a weeks of hour cardio sesssions. Way too much time and very counterproductive, I've learned. Hiit really kicks butt. I am a little worried in that I'm only 8 weeks out, but I have no symptoms/issues and the dr did clear me at 4 weeks for full exercise, so I hope there are no problems going on inside!

I don't do short sprints like that but try to do interval training weekly. Unfortunately, I don't get there every week. However, I are starting to train more consistently and will make a better effort to do a weekly one.
I typically do 400s or 800s. Since I'm a distance runner they work better for me. Regardless of which I do, I take one lap rest interval where I walk about 100-150 meters then very slowly jog the next 250-300. Since 800s are my preference I start with 4 the first time out then add 1 every week or every other week. I push hard but not an all out effort because it is important to try to maintain a consistent time with each one or better yet, make the last ones faster than the beginning one.
I would recommend checking with the doc first just to make sure you're ready. I think I did my first ones about 4 months post surgery.
Hope this is some help.
