Holy Cats! I don't know about the INR but I bet you cleaned out your Gall Bladder with all that olive oil.lol

Tom:

Maybe -- if you put those 2 jars of green olives with quite a few martinis. ;)

Actually, if there was ANY perceptible vitamin K in green olives, you would have seen a drop in your INR -- if the 2.9 test was taken right before you ate the olives and then retested about 72 hours later.

The increase in your INR is due to something else, most like a drop in activity level, perhaps a slight gastrointestinal bug.

First off - welcome to VR.com. Always happy to meet new members.

Many questions to go along with the olive diet. What was the time frame between tests? Did you take any new meds during that time? What was your activity level? Did you only eat 2 jars of olives or was your diet the same as usual with the addition of 2 jars of olives? Were you ill during the time between tests?

I agree with the others - it is unlikely you will see an INR increase from the olives. However, I am curious about why someone would eat 2 jars of olives at one time (or was this over a couple of days)?;) :D

It would have caused a drop if anything, not a rise. As geebee suggested, more info needed here.

I've sat and ate a jar of Manzanilla Olives and it hasn't affected my INR any. Now two jars, I haven't done yet. I'll have to try that the next time I get the olive munchies.

Green olives are great on pizza, in omelettes, and they're a key ingredient in my best veggie burgers, but they hadn't affected my INR at all. I'm not particularly fond of martinis.

I'm hijacking this thread for a second to get Jim's veggie burger recipe. If the key ingredient is olives - Sounds tasty!

Hello Tom!
Welcome, Welcome, Welcome. Since you are new here, you might want to take a glance at the anticoagulation information here http://www.valvereplacement.com/forums/showthread.php?t=17116

I love green olives, but two bottles..small ones, I hope. First, since your INR went from 2.9 to 3.6, there should be little concern because you don't need a dosage adjustment. Green "things" seem to cause the INR to decrease because they tend to have more vitamin K than most foods that are not green. THere are so many myths about anticoagulation and foods. My husband and I are both taking Coumadin. We eat whatever we like, but do try to be consistent over a few days. I have salads, asparagus, and brocolli all of the time and have had no problems. I would guess that olives would be ok, but maybe you might want to check the reasons for your craving two bottles. Olives are loaded with salt and fat.

When you have more questions, please post. Again, Welcome.

Kind regards,
Blanche

Lots of diced onions, lots of diced green peppers, a jar of green olives cut up.
So much for the veggie part.
Add several pounds of hamburger, a couple eggs, salt and pepper to taste.
Form patties, wrap each patty in two strips of bacon, and grill.

YUM! Thanks Jim. Now back to our regularly scheduled post.:D

this is a reply to the last message I posted. the two bottles of olives that I had were not at one time, it was a two week period.

2 bottles of olives over 2 weeks

2 bottles of olives over 2 weeks

Tom, since you consumed the two bottles of olives over a two week period, I would bet the Ranch that those tasty orbs had absolutely nothing to do with fluctuations and your INR. Hope the link that I posted for you was helpful.
Kind regards,
Blanche

I agree but, gosh, wouldn't it be great if we found out that something that actually tasted good could replace coumadin?;) :D ;)

Yeah, but the salt would get us. I can easily eat a jar of them in one sitting, but I always wind up downing a gallon of water during the rest of the day cause they make me so thirsty. Alas, never saw them increase my INR :( (nor decrease for that matter). :)

Warning...over use of smilies!
