13 years ago today, at this precise moment, I was in the middle of a very long surgery to replace my old Bjork-Shiley valve with a St. Jude. Happy to say all went well and here I am many years later still ticking.

Life is good even when things elsewhere are in turmoil. I am so happy to be alive and sad for those that are gone.

Thanks for being my friends both on-site and off.

A teen-ager!! That's great! Wishing you many, many more years of health & happiness!!

Congratulations on your 13 year valve birthday!! Very glad to be part of your friends. Let's go for another 13 years, and another, and another.

Congratulations, Gina. I hope it lasts you many many more years. Do you know what model St. Jude you have? I still can't imagine how you felt when your first valve got recalled. It had to have been a nightmare.

All my card says is 29M-101, Mechanical Valve (and of course the serial number).

Hearing about the recall was a nightmare. Especially since I had my second OHS after the recall but before it was widely known. It could have been replaced during my second OHS but I don't think the seriousness of it was fully known. In addition, early on the smaller valves were thought not to be fracturing but that changed. When I started having problems in 1994, we all thought it was due to strut failure in the Bjork-Shiley so we yanked it out. I have never had it tested because I truly don't believe I will get an honest answer (Shiley is the only company that examines the valves) - kind of like the proverbial wolf watching the hen house.

Anyway - I love my St. Jude and am hoping for another 50 years or so.;) :D

YAY!!! :D
Just think, in three years your valve will want one of those silly Super Sweet Sixteenth birthday parties. :p

Thanks for all your great contribution to VR!

Wonderful news:

Wonderful news:

It is wonderful to have a valve "worthy of its calling". I don't recall if you read the thread, but after my one year anniversary I wrote a few lines expressing how it felt to have a second chance at life with a valve that quietly ticks away, with a history that gives me confidence it will be there as long as I need it. My wife suggested I send a copy to St. Judes. I got a very nice reply, along with a t-shirt, note pad, and life size replica of my valve. My story pales in comparison to yours! I bet they would love to hear from you.

Congratulations Gina...what a great milestone...I hope your teenager is well behaved ...and stays that way for another 50 years!
