So here I am two weeks post op, can someone tell me why I frequently get hit with severe chills?

I noticed that I seemed more sensitive to cold during my hospital stay and would easily get chilled after stepping out of the shower, but the chills accompanied with profuse sweating this week have been brutal.

Is it related to the overall surgery, meds, my body trying to get clear of all the gunk related to the surgery, or something else? Please share if you know something about what's going on.

Temp

Temp

Yes, I have regularly taken my temp since release from the hospital and it runs normal or just a tad below normal. Temperatures taken during these bouts with chills have also been normal. Thanks.

I would run it past your doc. I think its fairly normal to have sweating after surgery, I didnt have it, but I have heard of others who have.

I remember others having the same complaint, but it is always best to run it by your doctor.

If I remember correctly, Tyce had both chills and sweats post op. Of course, it has now been over 4 years, so the memory has faded, but I seem to remember him freezing in bed the beginning of July and asking for the down comforter. Our dr. told us it was because he was anemic from the surgery and would even out over time. It definitely has.

Just to be safe, run it by your cardio and see what he says.

I had sweats and chills, especially at night. I think it went away after a couple of weeks though. I don't really know what their cause is. My temp was usually lower than average, often around 97. You're probably not in the mood for a MENopause joke:p...

I think you should run this by your doctor just for good measure. Can't hurt, right? Take care and post again.

Being cold is totally common after ohs: one of my recommendations for those approaching surgery is to lay in silk long underwear AND a warm throw during convalescence. As long as you don't have a fever, it's normal. A lot of folks also get the sweats (I was delighted not to be one of them - since I was in the middle of menopause when I had surgery, I actually enjoyed relief from hot flashes).

Bundle up!

8-9 weeks out from surgery I continue to frequently (a couple of times a week or more) have chills, often with shaking and chest pain usually in the evening (after 6pm) sometimes during the day. It seems like I can't keep warm. I've checked my temperature and it is normal and my office and home are kept very warm at 75 F +.

For me there is a correlation between doing too much work and having chills, etc. If I limit my work schedule (currently 8-10 hours per day) and get sufficient sleep (but I've had problems sleeping) I generally don't have a problem. 2 or more days at higher levels of activity and I am "sick" again. In that case I have chills on and off for a day give or take. My doctors advice has been to work less and rest more. I'm also still anemic from the operation.

Its been that way since surgery, of course at the beginning I couldn't work nearly as much as I do now. Also I was slow to figure out my limits.

Just my experience - your mileage may vary.

It's a common OHS side-effect, along with night sweats.

I believe it's left over from the lower body temperature they keep you at during surgery. I think it can take quite a while for your body's thermostat to readjust itself properly.

Best wishes.

I had chills and night sweats for about two months after surgery. The chills occurred almost nightly and my temperature would creep up to the mid-99's. I consulted with a doctor a couple times, and was told it was nothing. Eventually it went away, however, I occasionally still get night sweats, but not nearly as bad as they were those first two months...
