Nan

Well, the story goes like this....heart valve surgery leads to endocarditis. (probably)
-Endocarditis leads to IV penicillin.
-IV penicillin leads to both C.Dif and reduced vitamin K production by body from killing off good bacteria in gut.
-C. Dif leads to psuedomembranous colitis. (bloody diarrhea).
-Lack of vitamin K and not eating leads to INR of 6.8.
-Combination of INR and colitis causes really bad GI bleed.
-Hematocrit down to 22.
-Back into hospital for transfusions and vitamin K shots to stop bleeding.
-Put on Flagyl which is now causing severe nausea and vomiting.
-INR is at 1. Shots to cover until it is up.
-I feel absolutely awful and am beginning to wonder if the surgery was worth it and if I am going to get through this.

Thanks for letting me vent.

And you're probably wondering who might even read this at nearly 2 am your time? Me, here on the west coast. I'm really sorry to read all of this you've been through. And I'm really sorry your sleep is disturbed also. I hope it smooths out soon. You just vent away. We all care, Nan.

Hard times are here for you

Hard times are here for you

Oh, my, my, my!!! If all of this has happened to you, you are indeed having one of the worst times of your life. I am so sorry that you have had complications...maybe complications is the wrong word...what ever the right one is, I don't know. But, I do know that you appear to b in a whole of trouble and much discomfort...to say the least. I am almost at a loss for words, but I think I must say that better times are ahead for you. Sometimes, things are not best at the begining but they do improve.

Sending you all of the good wishes that I can muster. Your day will come.

Kindest regards,
Blanche

Nan..
I am very sorry.. what an awful ride you are on.. Praying here for quick resolution and a Full Return to Good Health very very soon!

Nan, vent away and let it out! Sounds like you need to. I'm very sorry to hear the bumpy road you've been travelling has had some huge potholes. I hope you reach smooth pavement soon. Best wishes that you feel better soon. Take care.

Oh Nan, what a vicious cycle! Hang in there! It does sound like you are getting appropriate care.

My daughter had a similar reaction to Flagyl and the doc switched her to something else--don't remember what it was but it was expensive (insurance covered) and caused no such problems.

Take care.:)

Nan-

I'm so sorry. What an awful situation! There is no easy way out of this, so just keep hanging on by your fingernails until everything rights itself again. Remember, your body wants to heal from illness of all kinds and will also be working along with the meds to get things back to where they need to be.

You'll be in my thoughts and I hope to see some progress however small in a couple of days.

this is an awful time you are going through. I am so sorry we will be adding extra prayers for you. and C-dif on top of it all. I pray you will be making progress soon. oh my. God bless...

Nan -

I am so sorry to hear you are going through this and it's good that you vented here. I felt exactly the same way after catching the flu while in early recovery and afib and shots for INR of 8 and and and.

I just sat on the floor of the bathroom after having vomited for the n'th time that day and was just about ready to give up. I thought, I've ruined my life, turned myself into an invalid, I never should have embarked on this journey at all. That was before I caught bronchitis two days later and coughed until I just had no muscle strength left in my chest to cough again. That was before the antibiotics ruined what was left of my GI strength.

Baby steps got me through, and you will too. Hang in there, better days will come. You won't be like this the rest of your life, this is just a phase even if it doesn't feel that way now. The next phase may be sunnier, there may be more rough times, but they won't last forever. Please stay strong, stay positive (easy for me to say, huh?), soldier on the best you can until happier times come, and they WILL.

I wish you all the best,
Ruth

Hang on in there

Hang on in there

You poor thing.
Please hang on in there. It will get better. Sounds like you are having the same ride I had a year ago, except my heart did not start again and I'm 100% paced too. Cdif is such good fun with the green bloody diarrohea. I too went through that "I wish I'd stayed as I was before" stage, especially as new valve is faulty too! HAHAHAHA ( That was my manic laugh) But life is slowly getting better. I had the all clear to go on holiday last week, so am already booked.
I hope this all clears away really soon, and you can get on with the new life this is meant to give you.
Take care

Lotti

Oh, Nan! I'm so very sorry to hear that you're going through all this "stuff"! Sometimes it just makes us feel better to let loose and vent big time! I know, as well as you do, that the folks here don't mind at all and can actually reach out and help. Be assured that we're all pulling for you as hard as we can that you'll get through this and feel better real soon.

Oh Nan....I am soooo sorry that your sick like this....

I hope you get to feeling better right quick...I am sorry I didn't see this sooner, it's been one of those days.....I'm a routing for you.....Please feel better soon!!! Harrybaby:eek:

Thank you one and all for your encouragement and support. As usual you folks are the best.

Things have gotten a little bit better in one aspect which is that my doc has switched me frm Flagyl to Vancomycin which seems to be much easier on the stomach !

On the negative side, the PICC line has started bleeding at the insertion site ...so off to the ER this morning. But it is still patent.....so now with an Ace bandage for mild pressure, it is just oozing. The surgeon who put it in was consulted and said that it will probably continue to ooze because I am on both Lovenox and Coumadin (waiting for the INR to go up).

Thanks again, everyone!

Hang in there

Hang in there

Hi Nan,

Hang in there. I was where you are last year, I had Prostectic valve endocarditis and a second open heart to replace the first valves only 7 months apart, I was very sick and couldn't imagine that I would ever feel good again. I had a lot of the same complications, it was a very slow recovery, but well worth it.

I will wish you a speedy and smooth recovery.

Kathy

I'm so very sorry to read of your troubles. I'm sure you are probably wondering just how much one person can take. I'm glad the Vanc is allowing you to feel a bit better.

I will keep you close in prayer. I hope you feel some tangible support here from your cyber family.

I'm encouraged to hear that you have a small positive change. Keep hanging on. One of these days, you will be feeling much better.

Oh, Nan,
I am so sorry to hear of all your problems. Please keep up the hope, you will get better. I will pray for you and like the priest at my husband service said ," Now I have someone up there to ask God for favors. "
Well, here goes, I am asking him right now and every day until you are better to intercede in your favor.
Are you still at the same address that you were last time?
