When Al's INR is too high, he has some V8 juice to lower it until the change of Coumadin dose kicks in. It's good to know who much vitamin K it contains. I was never able to find that. Now, if you really like V-8 and you want to enjoy it, you could include it in your diet on a regular basis and adjust your dose of anticoagulant accordingly. Remember, consistency is the answer...

About 500mg/cup.

Gina,

Where did you find that? I wrote to Campbells over 4 years ago asking if they could list the Vit K content & was "Politely" told that since the government doesn't require them to list it, they don't test for it.

Missy,

Don't be afraid of V-8 but use it wisely. I actually have a small 5.5 or 6oz glass every morning (leftover eating habit from my South Beach Diet). The key for me is that I have it every day, so it doesn't mess with my INR.

I have a list of foods and their Vit K content. Although it does not specify "V8", it does list - "Vegetable Juice Cocktail, Canned" which has to be pretty close to V8.

I don't know for sure either, but I drink a ton of the stuff, so I must be adjusted for it.

Well at least they took the time of day to write you back. I never did get an answer.

500 mg would probably turn your blood to jelly.

10 mg is a big dose.

It might be 500 mcg which is still a lot for someone on warfarin. If you drink it every day it would be accounted for but if it has this much and you stopped drinking it you could expect the INR to rise dramatically.

USDA Vitamin K content pdf file has 242 g (or 1 cup) of canned Vegetable juice cocktail as having 12.8 mcg (microgram) of Vitamin K which is about the same amount as 1 stalk of celery, 1 cup of mashed potatoes, 1 cup of lettuce, 1 piece of bluberry pie, etc.

I figured it couldn't be much because I drink lots of the stuff and it doesn't seem to make a bit of difference in my INR.

My apologies to all. The list I was sent is actually "K" content (potassium) not Vit.K.

I have to say tho, that 12.8 mcg sounds low when compared to all the Vit. K content of individual vegies including tomatoes. There must be a lot of water in that cup of vegie juice cocktail on their list.;) :D

"Dosing the Diet"

"Dosing the Diet"

I write this reply using the pen name of "annb" - I'm actually the spouse who's having the aortic valve replacement on 02/27/07 - for those of you that have walked this path before me, not foreign to you at all that I find going to sleep difficult.

Strange; I have no anxiety about the "procedure". My issue has always
been with the bloodthinner I'll be partnering with for the rest of my life.

What a borderline unbearable tragedy it is to know that I'll have to stop my participation in Ultimate Fighting Competitions, rock climbing, alligator wrestling, running with the bulls, etc. (not to mention wrestling with my 4 and 7 year-old sons).:D :D All previous is false, accept the sons, which are much more of a challenge than any of the previous mentioned make-believe activities.

I'm rambling...in conclusion, I understand dose the diet versus diet the dose.

Most sincerely your cauliflower, lettuce, meat, dairy and V-8 consuming soon to be a member of the "reunion class",

Badvalve Byron (aortic valve replacement with ATS valve)

I have enjoyed this forum more than I can say...

Byron put on a helmet and attack them boys! :D As long as they aren't wielding baseball bats or swords, you need to show them your still tough and a rough houser. Never let this drug get in the way of fun!

Eat what you like to eat, including things that are green or even high vit k. Once your diet is established, so also will be the dose.

Byron,

Happy to see you posting. Keep your sense of humor as it will get you through all this with flying colors.

I had my first head injury (after going on coumadin 26 years ago) a few days ago. I was going to sit back down at my desk not realizing the chair had moved. I fell, hitting the back of my head very hard on the desk return. The sound was not one I would like to hear again in my lifetime. I must admit, I was panicked thinking I was going to have serious problems.

My head is sore and I have a goose egg the size of Texas (okay - slight exaggeration) but no signs of any other damage (I did visit my doctor to be checked). My INR, the day before, was 4.2.

Don't recommend anyone else try this at home or work but wanted to share that these things are not only "survivable" but usually relatively uneventful.;) :D ;)
