I finally got the news; I will have surgery on Feb 8th and today is my birthday. I look at this as a good birthday present. I am still relatively healthy and my heart is in good shape except for my Aortic Value. The plan is to have Dr Petterson at the Cleveland Clinic do the surgery giving me a human value. What is most exciting about this news is getting back on my mountain bike by this fall and riding the trails. That is what I miss the most when I was told to stop doing certain exercises. What I really don't miss is the running. Well, I do miss it since I can't run now. I plan to work up to a 5K run (most likely walk) by this fall and back to the 1/2 marathon by the following derby day (first Saturday in May 08). Yes, I am excited.

Happy Birthday....

Happy Birthday....

*Hi Mark, HAPPY BIRTHDAY... and what a grreat day to get the good news about your surgery....now you can truly look forward....and you sound like you have lots to strive for. Best Wishes ...Jacqui.

Congratulations, Mark, both on your birthday and on receiving your surgery date. I put you on the VR surgery calendar, so you're good to go!:p :p
Try to relax and enjoy the next three weeks. :)

Happy Birthday, Mark. Congratulations on the date, and especially on having Dr. Pettersson as your surgeon. He was on my short list, also.

I'm curious what factored into the two of you deciding on an allograft rather than a heterograft, mechanical, or Ross?

Thanks!

Happy Birthday Mark and congratulations on the surgery date- it's always a relief to have things under way and you sound like you have a wonderful outlook. Best Wishes,
Phyllis

Congratulations! And Happy Birthday! It really is just about one of the best presents you can give yourself.

Stretch,

Dr Stewart at the Cleveland Clinic suggested I get the human valve. He listed them in order what he thinks my best options are taking into consideration of my condition. The various tissue valves came before the mechanical valves (stinted bovine was second). There was no talk about a Ross procedure. I guess with the radiation damage, it really is not an option. We will see what Dr Petterson says, I guess he has the final say on the Dr side. I was hoping that the Dr would suggest a human valve over the other tissue valves. So I really did not question to much after he told me his suggestions. Dr Stewart did say something about the calcification around the annulus (not sure of the spelling but it is the ring around the valve) is the reason a human valve is the best option.

Thanks for the notes,

Mark

Congratulations Mark on your birthday and getting the surgery date set. I was soooo happy to get my date too. It's great to approach this with the attitude you have, that we are so very fortunate to live in a time when these heart troubles are fixable and you're on your way already to a good recovery.

All my best,
Ruth

Mark, my congratulations on getting that date set. I still feel elated about mine (most of the time)...just 8 days away! Good luck on your goal for the derby half marathon...my goal is Walt Disney World half (maybe the full) January 2008!

Happy Birthday and Congrats!

Glad you got the date as a great birthday present. Happy birthday.
About your running goals, you can do it but I will say it's not all that easy. Just take your time and do just a little bit more every day.
Good luck.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Mark!
